Do I need a source to start playing, or can i just play w/o a source?
Umm, if by a Source you mean a Source engine game, then yes, you need one. There is a list on the steam store's gmod page that identifies what games fulfill the requirement.
You should get CounterStrike, that's probably the best thing to own, amoung the cheapest.
