• Water Physics - Isn't it impossible?

I thought that dynamic water (eg water in a bucket falls out when you tip it) in a computer is impossible, yet people keep talking about adding things to make it possible etc .. ???
Of course it's possible, it would just take tons and tons of computing power
It's possible, just not with the current build of Source. There's the dynamic water plugin, though.
Just remember: Bill gates used to think 256k was enough memory for anybody. Now, everyone needs at least 512mb. My point: Be patient, and great things will come :D

Everything is possible with a computer (in theory), it's a matter of time, techology and money.

This is the closest you can get to it in Garry's Mod. http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=314447
http://www.bladeinteractive.com/hydro.html Looks kick ass. (HydroEngine is compatible with Source, let me find the link...)
I want a video of that!
Wow, can't want for a video or trailer of that, pure awesome.
There's a mod for water physics, it just lags like insane, and in my opinion, doesn't work very well. I'm sure someday Source will decide to put in dynamic water physics, but that might be a while from now. Unless some insane scripter decides to script it, we might not have that for a while.
Ageia Physx need to be integrated into Steam games. http://youtube.com/watch?v=bihXl6W9gi4
Just remember: Bill gates used to think 256k was enough memory for anybody. Now, everyone needs at least 512mb. My point: Be patient, and great things will come :D
Correction, now everone needs at least 1024mb.
Correction, now everone needs at least 1024mb.
512mb is nothing =/
There is a water mod...
It's more like a puddle mod, until the day that Havok handles groups of objects better.
I wish it at least had water surface physics (waves and such).
Just remember: Bill gates used to think 256k was enough memory for anybody. Now, everyone needs at least 512mb. My point: Be patient, and great things will come :D
He said "640k ought to be enough for everybody," which was an opinion, and a good one, at that.
Don't forget, Water Mod is NOT dynamic water. Just looks like it. Don't be fooled.
Couldn't you do water physics fairly easily in Source using particles affected by gravity and bound together through ball socket constraints? It'd lag like shit in mulitplayer, but it'd work fine under most computers in singleplayer.
Couldn't you do water physics fairly easily in Source using particles affected by gravity and bound together through ball socket constraints? The new particle functionality makes them a great alternative to small physics models in most cases, but since they have no volume they can't collide together to fill up volumes and things. If you're looking for a nice simplespraying gun though, particle water effects are great.
Not with the new one heading our way, it can handle up to 50 000 props simultaneously crashing together and in an enclosed space:D @ I'm Crimson
Not with the new one heading our way, it can handle up to 50 000 props simultaneously crashing together and in an enclosed space:D @ I'm Crimson
If it ever arrives. <3 Valve.
If VALVe decides to upgrade to it I'll...I don't know but I'll be very pleased:v:
It's impossible to recreate in source at the moment. If valve decides to modify the engine to enable it, then it will become possible. At the moment however the havok physics system is ill equipped to process dynamic water, and most people lack the computing power to process it anyway. People keep asking because they're idiots.
I think a Post Your 'Wouldn't it be great if' thread is in order. ... Well don't look at me, I'm not going to make it.
In EP2 there will be dynamic mesh, that could make water, and not soo laggy one.
He said "640k ought to be enough for everybody," which was an opinion, and a good one, at that.
He didn't actually say that, chck wikiquote: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bill_Gates
I thought that dynamic water (eg water in a bucket falls out when you tip it) in a computer is impossible, yet people keep talking about adding things to make it possible etc .. ???
It isn't impossible, but it involves some major coding.
