I have just heard about Garry's mod and i dont know if it's for half life 2 or which other game it is for.

Now, let me start.
Once upon a time in a kingdom called Half-Life 2, there was a new employee in the mod factory. Garry Newman started building a Sandbox modification for HL2. Originally, Garry's Mod only had rope and weld. He started making Garry's Mods, all the way up to 9. Then, he "sold" it to Valve, who put the current Garry's Mod (aka Garry's Mod 10, The commercial Garrysmod, Garrysmod 11 etc.) on steam.
To actually answer your question, partially it is for HL2. You need one Source-engined game for it to work. I would recommend buying The Orange Box with it. You can also get Garry's Mod 9.0.4 for free, but I wouldnt recommend it.

The Commercial Version. The one you can buy from the Steam Store.
9.0.4 is best from the free ones, tough.
9.04c is better of the free ones, rather than regular 9.04, as it's multiplayer still works.
