Custom backgrounds

I downloaded a custom background and it doesn't work. when i start up gmod, it shows the default background, then while its loading it shows my custom background, and when it finishes loading its the default background again. I put the folder in garrysmod\materials\console.

Why would yo put it in that directory?

rename background thats custom background01 and before that delete background 01 from console

I'm having the same bullcrap and I don't know what the problem is. I thought it was the resolution size since the background worked at 1024x1024. After I changed the resolution up to 1440x900, gmod displayed the default background. Apparently, that's not the problem because I still have the problem and it's annoying.

Help will be most appreciated.

Yes the background can be changed. Any picture can be converted to .vtf and it should display as the background. Assuming that the file is named correctly and that it is in the correct directory.

I'm still having the same issues and I was thinking, should there be a .vmt file. Could that be the reason why the custom background doesn't display at 1440x900 resolution or is that resolution just not compatible with a custom background? Or do I have to find a background that is the same resolution as I am running?

I just loaded all of the resolutions and the background only works in the normal aspect ratio. Both widescreen ratios did not display the custom background. Is it possible to have a .vtf in the 1440x900 resolution. I tried to load a picture in vtfedit and it would not allow that resolution. Any ideas?

i dont know if this has been solved yet but il tell you anyways.
:you have it in the right place.
:make sure the name is background01.vtf
:make sure it is a vtf file
:make sure it is 1024x1024
:make sure you delete the old one, DO NOT DELEATE THE CODES!! only the vtf.img
