I am using VTFEdit to convert a slew of .png files to .vtf files. My question is, how do I get them to not look like crap? In the import options, I have both normal format and alpha format set to RGBA8888. I don't know what the qualities are of each or if that even matters, so I was wondering if anyone could help me get the quality to be better.

In this image you can see what I mean. I have a .png image of the heart, and I convert it to vtf. Then, using the same .vmt file as the one that the silkicons use included in garrysmod, I add that under a different name. You can see the difference between mine and garrys. Left is mine, right is the included one. Why is mine such worse quality?
If I save the .png as a .jpg, the quality is improved drastically, but it does not support transparency. Halp?
.gif has transparancy.
Import as a png, then before saving, on the bottom left there is a series of check boxes. Make sure the following are checked.
Clamp T
Clamp S
No Mipmap
No level of detail
8 bit alpha
With any luck, it should improve the quality. It works on my sprays too, so they don't get raped when the texture settings are set to medium
I just tried, and .gif has even worse quality than .png.
EDIT: I'll try what frohman said.

Nope, didn't help :S
Well that's odd... hang on I'ma upload a screenshot of 2 sprays side by side with differen't qualities. If it works with sprays then logic dictates it works with any other vtf based image.

Have a look at that. The image on the left is my spray, with the method I used (import as a png, check the boxes, save, etc.) and the image on the right is, I presume, just a jpeg from the internet that got directly ported into gmod. You can see there's a good difference.
Also, the texture settings were on medium (damn map)
EDIT: Have you tried setting the normal format to DXT1 and the alpha format to DXT5? That's default and because you changed them it may cause an issue.

Yeah there's definitely a difference. I'll try setting it to DXT1 and DXT5 and see what happens.

Nope, looks the same as my first pic. Here's a picture of my settings:

General tab. Tick the generate mipmaps box and set the mipmap filter to Box and the Sharpen Filter to Sharpen Soft.
I hope this works as i'm running out of ideas fast.
Actually I got it to be high quality by checking SRGB, Clamp-s and Clamp-T, no mipmaps, no level of detail, 8 bit alpha, and Point-something on the flags. Thanks for your help.
