Personally, I think we should just remove every single thing on GMod.org. - Garry's Mod

Going to keep it short and simple. GMod.org is cluttered with thousands upon thousands of shit. I would give a rough estimate of how much good/bad I see; If there are 25,000 files on GMod.org, only 2000 are used. That was irrelevant, probably. But it kind of shows how much good/bad there is nowadays. But back to being simple: Clean the entire GMod.org website, and start fresh. This might cause some [I]very[/I] big rage, but I'm sure lots of popular stuff will re-appear. I ask of this, because I see so much useless stuff on GMod.org. I see maps that are not even playable because they have been poorly mapped (I'm not complaining, I'm saying this through the eyes of a good mapper), I see models that have no use other than just lying around, I see LUA that is frowned upon. Personally, I think GMod.org should be wiped clean and started again. If this idea happens to be taken into consideration, might I add a "preserve" list? For those who are known amongst the Facepunch community to upload what was popular stuff once again. But it's now just one of the hundreds upon hundreds of useless dupes that no-one will ever download. Hammys and phx pack [url]http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=18955[/url] Uploaded 960 days ago - No-one will download this. It has some broken shit, and it's become very useless. City 2174 [url]http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=12080[/url] Uploaded 1035 days ago - This is VERY old. One of the oldest. But anyhow, it's self explanatory. A [b]very[/b] useless duplicate. Probably broken as hell too. Last but not least our most annoying popup download: Kill Breen [url]http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=71542[/url] Uploaded 273 days ago - Uploaded less than a year ago, and it's one of the tens of tens of Kill Breen "maps" (that's in air quotes for a reason) and dupelicates. No-one will use these. These are just wasting GMod.org bandwidth. Just a few of the stuff that clutters the hell out of GMod.org. I'm sure you all have seen more useless crap than any good thing on GMod.org. There are explosive admin/minge weapons that spam the shit out of everything and crash players, useless car duplicates that can be made in literal seconds, crappy maps that are ancient and were badly made. Mappers, modders, scripters, and modelers should all put their stuff (be it worthy & any good) on the preserve list. It will upload like any normal gmod.org file, only it should show up AFTER the entire download content of gmod.org is gone. So it's like pre-ordering a game. You get it as soon as it's released.

I agree, now days its full of mingey advance dupes, retarded sweps and pointless maps. We gotta wipe it clean and start from the beggining. I also think GMOD.org should also feature a section where you can get SVNS, since there is always new people asking where to get Wire or Phx

I think it should be wiped so the search could once again be reliable. I searched "SWEPS" and ended up with more maps, vehicles, and background than SWEPS. There are SO MANY mingey weapons that do the same exact thing, SOO many reuploads that say "I couldn't find it so I re-up'd it" that it's insanely annoying. Just wipe the fucking site clean..except my files :tinfoil:

Most of the good addons have SVNS. We can wait a while until they reupload.

If I was a prolific content author, I wouldn't really take too kindly to having all my cool addons deleted for the sake of getting rid of mingey crap.

Frankly, I think this is a bit elitist. There are thousands of downloads on Gmod.org that aren't famous or super popular, but that doesn't mean they're not used or liked. Even if someone uploaded a map that isn't great, maybe because they're new to mapping, they're just trying to contribute to the community. It's not as if it's a personal affront to you if you don't like what's been uploaded, just simply don't download it. Read the sticky, it says that it's just a place to upload stuff for everyone else to benefit from, not a collection of only the best files. The ones that you don't download aren't causing any harm by existing. The only possible inconvenience thay could cause is that they make it harder to find things, but that's why the most popular ones are filtered to the front of the page, so by that theory, they would only cause inconvenience if you were searching for an unpopular download which would prove my point that there are downloads that are unpopular but still wanted.

The point is that 85%+ of the site is just stuff like "MY S00P3R Aw3some adm1n sw33p!" that's made in a SWEP Generator, or is someone elses work. Then some more of the site is SVN reuploads that are horribly outdated. Then some more is other uploads of people saying "I couldn't find it so I reuploaded it" when there are loads of other copies on the site. Then some more is just stolen work, and the more is stuff that isn't even related to GMod or the Source Engine at all. Finally, the rest is genuine files that are made properly and are worth download. Wouldn't you like to see that deleted?

There should be a poll on every single file, and you'll only be able to vote if you've dled it. Once you've dled it, you can vote on it's rating. If within 2 weeks of voting, the average rating is less than 5/10, then moderators can delete the file. Or let the moderators choose what stays and what doesn't. The ones that really need to go are all of those extra phx packs as they are HUGE.

I agree with this thread 100% GarrysMod.org needs to be wiped clean completely. All the good stuff is put on a list and reuploaded. All the bad, useless, stolen, and "i cant fined s0 i euplod so u can hav" stuff is deleted forever. The best idea ever.

Now, I can definetly understand you wanting all the stolen work and re-uploaded stuff deleted, but if everything were deleted I think it would actually make the re-uploading and stealing worse. Think about it, once everything's gone, the pricks who claim credit for other peoples work would see an opportunity to re-upload a popular file, and claim it's theirs because it'd be the only one on the site. This would then cause yet more re-uploads of the same things, and thus we'd get loads of copies of the popular files on the site, therefore defeating the purpose of deleting everything.

I've only been uploading addons for two months now and I can say garrysmod.org is about 90% BS. I say, go ahead! The good stuff will reappear! Most of the stuff on the site are forgotten creations by long-dead-to-the-GMod-world players who probably have jobs by now.

I am sick of looking for a popular addon and having to trawl though 5 pages of "hai guise not mi work but i reupload in case people can't find it"

I've put up some of my older stuff that if deleted, I'll never upload again. I may be just one content creator, but I doubt I'm the only one that has this view. A site wipe would defeat the purpose of the site in the first place, as an archive of garry's mod related files. For every hundred useless downloads you'd delete, there's one that you'd really end up missing. A complete wipe will loose more meaningful content then I'd care to see lost.

What they could do is wipe everything that has less than say, 1k downloads and/or hasn't been updated in the past half-year or so. That way the latest and greatest stuff stay, as well as some of the really popular old stuff, and all the rubbish goes into the oblivion. ;)

I think it could be due a wipe. Anything more than a few megs typically has SVNs these days and is offsite anyway. So yeah, get ride of all the "KILL DOCTOR BREEN" saves and "WEAPONS FOR GIVING PEOPLE ON YOUR SERVER A HARD TIME COS DERE THE MINGES NOT YOU LOLOL" admin weapon packs nobody needs or wants. Get it back to just the good, useful mods that most servers use and everyone wants. insteaad of having to hopelessly trawl through pages of 5 second weapon garbage. And of course if there's a tonne of crap, it could be adding untold gigabytes of unnecessary space to the server. which with some suppliers can cost money too. I think he's running the server himself now out of his office but I dunno for sure..
