i have downloaded some vehicles for my addon folder. i extract the files then keep them like that, but every time i try using gmod, they are either errors or they will not even show up in the menu. what do i do?
Check if the folder has an info.txt in it.
a text to tell me how to install them?
info.txt is a file to tell gmod about the existence of the addon itself.
If there isnt one, try to find a readme.
If their is a info.txt = install like a normal addon
if their is not = grab all the folders inside of the folder you got when you clicked download (should be like lua, sound and so on...[maybe more or less]) and put them in garrysmod > garrysmod. NOT IN THE ADDONS FOLDER

NEVER EVER DO THIS. It fucks shit up.
The reason the vehicle addons don't work is probably because you're trying to install the vehicle addons for the Ep1 Gmod, which isn't compatible with Ep2 Gmod.

It dosent *ahem* anything up. It works just fine, ive tried. The addons folder emulates the folders outside the addons folder, so it can be uninstalled more easely. You can still uninstall if you uninstall the way i said, its just harder as you need to find individual files/folders and delete them. Addons will NOT work without a info.txt

Yeah, what if a file in the addon had the same name as a core Gmod file? It would overwrite it. Then the game would screw up because the file version it was expecting wasn't there. The most common are Lua and soundscape files which really cause the game to foul up when messed with.

That's why you either make a new one or copy one from another addon and edit the file to describe the new addon.

Core gmod files are kept in the gmod GCF, the garrysmod folder is for custom content like maps and such, its made so we cant screw up gmod to a unrepairable extent (you can screw it up like this but you can re-install) and cause i believe somewhere it said its not allowed to edit the GCF. And yeah making a info.txt is a good option, but might be a little confusing for new people.
i took gigabites choice and found out most WERE EP1 gmod files.
lol thnx

If a file in the addon were the same name as a file in the GCF, it would override it, thus causing the same exact problem it would as if it overwrote it. Then people come here bitching why their Gmod doesn't work.
lol. ill remember not to do that then
