Im fairly new to garry's mod and i was wondering what mods (other than the wire mod) would be good to download, cuz i can't tell the difference of a necessary mod and a mod that just takes up room on my laptop

And Wire if you want to be able to join most servers. You don't have to use it, but you will want the models.
PHX3 from the svn not the download on the front page on garrysmod.org. Wiremod from the svn go to [url]www.wiremod.com[/url] and click the download link on the left side and read intructions. Smartsnap it is on front page of garrysmod.org right now. And Smart Constraint just search for that on garrysmod.org
Or play without addons. Its much faster loading, no errors and if your in a server youd be amazed what people can do with vanilla stuff.
