ALL SERVERS TAKEN -snip-
Why are you doing this exactly?
Why are you doing this exactly?
I want a server for my group, but i dont really want to go through the hassle. Gmod servers isnt new to me, but annoying to setup and manage, so i thought i could give someone a chance to have their own server.... technically..
I have a feeling its because he wants to increase his forum's and community's playerbase by branching it into garry's mod, but he doesn't want to deal with actually managing two more servers; honestly, it's not a bad deal if you're allowed full access and can host whatever you want. It'd only be dick if the owner made players register in a steam group of forum or something. Though honestly, it's hard to start a new community and get a large playerbase. Most of the popular servers in Gmod currently have had their playerbases for years, and new servers that pop up hardly get much attention even if they are branding something new and enjoyable.
Well what type of server are you looking for?
Well what type of server are you looking for?
Pretty sure anything that generates a player traffic that gets the community more attention.
Well what type of server are you looking for?
Like i said, your free to do whatever you want. A nice fancy sandbox server? Sure. A overdone DarkRP server? Sure. A simple TTT server? Sure. As long as it has traffic.
Isn't 2005 anymore, only way to get traffic is to either have a HUGE user base on your gaming forum, have a community that's been around for a long time, or to have a custom gamemode.

It's really impossible to get traffic unless you already have a longlasting playerbase and community from before. No one wants to leave their comfy communities with all their perks, hats, items, and ingame money, for another community and server that usually doesn't have the meta rewards. [editline]26th May 2013[/editline] Heavy marketing, a large community, and metarewards are the only way to get larger playerbases. That's just the way it works. [editline]26th May 2013[/editline] Tons of lua fellows here give up on Garry's Mod because they work tirelessly on their projects and mods and hardly get a mention because the current gamemode giants that have been around for years will continue to attract players in a similar way to how McDonald's is able to keep consumers coming. Appeal to kids and give them something familiar, and they'll always come back for more. Current Gmod gamemodes, TTT and DarkRP and such specifically, are able to live because when we first played, these gamesmodes were huge and new. As we played, more people copied them and more new players joined. Familiarity set in and people didn't want to try new things, they stuck with what they knew and trusted. 6 odd years later, here we are, still in the same boat. Unless a community can bring something new to the table, and raise a new generation of Garry's Mod players, it'll be impossible to get a gamemode out there that becomes as successful as the top dogs we have now. [editline]26th May 2013[/editline] Garry's Mod's gamemode debates are almost exactly like the debates between small business and franchise businesses. It's scary how much the game's gamemode have turned into an economy.
I would agree with Loriborn, there are so many powerful competitors that it is very hard to get yourself a populated server unless you are willing to put a huge amount of work getting it there personally, otherwise you will have a very hard time finding someone to do what you ask. Regarding his comment about custom gamemodes however, I do believee there is the potential for new gamemodes to gain popularity and maybe even start to enter the playing field, we are just in a bit of a slow point in development right now as many new gamemodes are kept private or are not designed with massive user base in mind. Too many custom gamemodes are created with the idea that they will have a monopoly on the idea and therefor get alot of players, the problem is that this simply isn't the case, with the gamemode sorting system you must have a number of other servers to achieve the player counts necessary to work your way up the listing. I do believe that as people come to understand the dynamics of the new system and the mentality of the playerbase it may be possible to introduce new gamemodes. It remains true though that the stakes have been raised and there is a great deal of competition in the form of darkrp and TTT, making new servers and rising to the top is far more difficult but this is not to say its impossible, there is always room for someone with a good enough product. Someone famous once said "Everything of importance has already been done" posting the question where does humanity move onto, a century later man walked on the moon.

Someone famous once said "Everything of importance has already been done" posting the question where does humanity move onto, a century later man walked on the moon.
Best way to build a gamemode people with enjoy is by providing them metarewards that extend beyond the game itself. Life in general is about acquiring more stuff to show off how much you've accomplished; cars, trophies, clothing, this transfers into most games as well. What is the point of a TF2 hat or of Xbox live points or of the Steam badges? The items in most MMOs? Nothing. But people love getting rewarded for their loyalty to a specific product in a way that they can show off to other loyal players. This is why communities, such as Lifepunch, are often so successful; they begin with an already decent playerbase, and garner more and more loyal members due to external rewards that can be both purchased and earned. This gives players a goal to work toward, and unlike the items that only last during a gamemode's "round," (like weapon ranks in gun game) these rewards are not only public, but last forever and show other players that you are superior to them, and have put X amount of time and effort into the community. No one wants to play and have their time wasted in the long run; that's why so many popular servers, and in turn, gamemodes, provide external prizes for time on the server. Hats, trails, titles, they all seem to be the rage, and they'll continue to be. Honestly, I won't complain, because I know I, like many, also enjoy the nice appearance of a badge or hat that shows off my work; but it also means that if you can't provide the same rewards to players, your server and gamemode likely won't take off as well as some have. In order to achieve a playerbase in a new gamemode or server should place emphasis on giving them something to work toward in the long run that other players will note and strive to emulate.
