Updates
03/10/09 - First post updated, a lot cleaner now.
---------
Set on a space station, this teamwork based game sets you in one of the 6 roles in the ship. This is pretty much to Sci-fi thrillers, as Left for Dead is to Zombie Movies.
Game Mode 1
Backstory: There has been a malfunction with the station's sentient computer system. ARC Artificially Intelligent Robotic Controller. ARC had previously been in charge of life support, until a unseen piece of debris crashes into the station. On impact all the crew members on board the ship were killed, except the ship's second in command, Arnold (after Rimmer not Schwarzenegger.) Although ARC has not lost control steering, life support and such
Sadly for him, ARC has a grudge on Arnold. ARC decides to kill him off, as he only accounts for 0.5% of the ships populace and so doesn't matter. Arnold finds
Too complicated back story?
Game Mode Info: The problem is that the computer has gone crazy as a motherfucker. It's 5 vs 1. Last person alive becomes the computer. As with game mode B there are problems with the ship. The AI (controlled by someone) can also set up fake problems and alarms (like in 2001 where HAL says there is a problem with the satellite and traps the guy outside. Less needed things (like a satellite) are more deadly traps.
Lets say the computer says there is a problem with the electricity and the lights will fail in 3 minutes. It's a dangerous task but not doing it looses the lights making it harder to see other stuff.
Or maybe there is a gas leak (poisonous but not flammable) in the part of the ship you're in. Either the engineer can go fix it, losing health by being exposed to the gas, or the group can move to another part of the ship.
--------
Game Mode B:
Backstory:
Game Mode Info: During a hit by an asteroid (there were loads and so end up being hit by one, even though you try and move out the way) and in seeps a strange living liquid/ooze. The strange substance is corrosive to humans and if you get 'eaten' by the ooze then it grows more powerful and shit like that.
I haven't decided whether you should respawn, it would be a bit boring for the players if you didn't.
The aim of the game is to keep rearing the ship and looking after it while trying to find out how to get rid of the substance.
You can do this by: getting close to it and collecting samples to find out it's weakness' (different every time so you can't just kill it with fire every time.
Classes:
The Second in Command - Arnold
Can open doors fastest.
Has a map of the whole ship*
Has a map of the section of the ship he's in, in the HUD
Only has a melee... it's his captains log. It's actually just a stick.*
The Techie - Dave
Can fix oxygen levels and computer problems fastest.
He can also open doors joint 2nd fastest.
Has a map of the section of the ship he is in, in the HUD
Has a Stun Pistol* and no melee.
The Engineer
Fixes leaks
He is joint 2nd fastest at opening doors.
Has a map of the section of the ship he is in, in the HUD
Has a wrench melee and a Stun Pistol.
The Guard
Has a bad ass shotgun... Limited Ammo!*
Also has a stun pistol and baton.
He is slow at opening doors, the idiot.
He is also the slowest at every thing but a fast sprinter.
Has a map of the section of the ship he is in, in the HUD.
The AI - ARC
Can open/close doors
Can send false warnings to plays about ship problems.
Can remove the air from a section of the ship if it is sealed from the other sections.
Can only see though the CCTV Cameras placed around the ship.
Weapons
Why you need weapons when fighting against a computer? Read on!
Melee
The are used to break glass and smash boxes. Glass blocking fire extinguishers and other cool stuff. Boxes full of ammo, health and things like chemicals to make bombs, .oh, and pills. GOT PILLS HERE!
Stun Pistols
These make the Symbiote's (wip name) tentacles retreat for a second.
Shotgun
Breaks CCTV but watch out, there is VERY limited ammo, so only break CCTV cameras when necessary. Or in Game mode B it makes the Symbiote (not just it's tentacles) retreat a bit, so you can get past.
Other Features
Doors
For big ass doors you have to enter a code (similar to arming a bomb in CSS) once the code is put in then the door opens.
If the AI Player can close all doors to a section of the ship then he remove the air from that section.
It happens at a medium-slow pace so you can open the doors but you gotta be quick.
I just thought, how about this: You cannot open doors between sections if the air pressure is not the same. So one person must fix the air pressure, this must be fixed from a different section.
Read this: When I talk about opening doors slowly I mean big ass doors blocking sections of the ship off from each other. There will also be normal sized doors that open normally. Except this is space so they are sliding star trek doors. SICK.
extra features:
-When the AI player types in chat it doesn't show up but flashes on screens around the ship. Why? because it's cool.
-And when the AI player uses mic it comes from speakers around the ship.
-The AI Player can only see though CCTV cameras. They are dotted around the ship in plenty.
-The CCTV cameras can be shutdown but it's hard to do.
-Light switches?
TEAMWORK IS A MUST.
Making this thread for somewhere to gather my thoughts and hopefully get some feedback. Don't except this release ANY time soon. I've never even tried coding a game mode before so this may go to shit, hopefully not.
From my post in 'if you could design a game'
First thoughts and just throwing out ideas.
Ok right. So there is a group of you like in Left 4 Dead, working as a team on the space ship. You have to regulate oxygen levels and steer the ship from asteroids at random moments.
Game Mode A: The problem is that the computer has gone crazy as a motherfucker.
Game Mode B: During a hit by an asteroid (there were loads and so end up being hit by one, even though you try and move out the way) and in seeps a strange living liquid/ooze.
Lets say it's weakness is fire, this time.
You could fine chemicals in the science department to combine and make a bomb. The problem is that you are on the otherside of the ship and the substance lies between you and the science department.
Or perhaps you could lead into a trap of a section of the ship. Then totally remove this part of the ship and let it float away.
More later. Feedback? Would you like to see this (but better) made?
Edit: Might try it in Fretta.
Also, it would be semi class based. Captain of the ship, Science Officer, Security and Engineer. There is a limit of 2 of each class in a game of 5 people. They can all do everything but say; the scientist faster at science stuff, security has better aim.
Next post
Well, this Ooze/Substance would mainly go along the floor but would attack you. The important thing is it would attack like the Venom Symbiote from Spiderman.

bits coming off it like that.

Here is some stuff laid out better.
* = you are probably thinking wtf, so there is more info later.
Classes:
The Captain
Can open doors fastest.
Has a map of the whole ship*
Has a map of the section of the ship he's in, in the HUD

The Geek(wip name) How about 'The Techie'? 'The Tech guy'?
Can fix oxygen levels and computer problems fastest.
He can also open doors joint 2nd fastest.
Has a map of the section of the ship he is in, in the HUD
Has a Stun Pistol* and no melee.
The Engineer
Fixes leaks
She is joint 2nd fastest at opening doors.
Has a map of the section of the ship she is in, in the HUD
Has a wrench melee and a Stun Pistol.
The Guard
Has a bad ass shotgun... Limited Ammo!*
Also has a stun pistol and baton.
He is slow as fuck at opening doors, the idiot.
He is also the slowest at every thing but a fast sprinter.
Has a map of the section of the ship she is in, in the HUD

I might have to only think about one game mode for a bit then try putting another in. I'm thinking start off with the crazy computer AI then work on the Symbiote? What do you think?
Will update with MSPaint of how maps will be laid out tomorrow. nvm.

Sounds Fun I'd Play it - Make it Look super cool.... Can i be a play tester ?
Sounds alot like Space Station 13, Hats to you if you can re-create it in Source.
Might have been better if you actually looked at what you wrote rather then actually rushing to post it on facepunch.

Is the guard a he-she? Because you've put "has a map of the section of the ship "she" is in", as well as "He is slow as fuck"
He is slow as fuck, has gone crazy as a motherfucker.
Also try not to swear in your thread.
So the monster dude will attack with tendrils, like Alex Mercer from [Prototype]?

omg mans. i totally had that idea first so no1 tell the copyright laws about this.
Sounds alot like Space Station 13, Hats to you if you can re-create it in Source.
Yeh thats what the idea was from. It wont be that extensive to have proper regulating levels of keeping the ship running, just random times when something needs fixed. It would be really cool to work out l4d's AI Director for this but of course I'd have to wait for them to release it.
[editline]09:16AM[/editline]
Also try not to swear in your thread.
but swearing is fucking A, and gets the job done.
You can use the same concept, i don't see any problems with that..
Making an extremely alpha of the space ship, just to get ideas about level sizing and whether to have multiple ships for more playability.
Need some feedback:
1) Would it be worth having areas outside the ship? (Such as fixing a broken satellite.)
2) Should I put in outfits ala SS13? The outfits would be space suits, strong suits and other things that are for a purpose not for looks.
Needs more cowbell
Needs more cowbell
Stop bullying me.
Make it!
Making it as a space ship is going to be too hard to map for what I want it to be (nice looking from the inside and out)
The reason I started thinking about moon base is because I was thinking about 2001 and the film moon. How 2001 has a realistic approach artifical gravity and how I hate the falseness that comes with seeing people in space walking around normally.
Who would like to see it set as a moon base? With semi/low gravity?
More gravity then you would on the moon irl.
The moon has 83% less gravity than earth, so that would be a bit extreme.

Yes because in an age where we have the ability to build massive spaceships with complicated AI, we haven't developed the simple thing as a magnetic boot. /sarcasm

Yes and magnetic water and magnetic hair (to make it stay down) and magnetic plastic things and magnetic fucking everything you smartarse cunt.
