• High quality Gmod server host?
    21 replies, posted
Hi, i currently host statistically the 15th biggest server on garrysmod. I aim for 90 daily players with an acerage of about 60 props and 8-15 entities per player and recently i have been having ddos attacks. The host i am with right now doesnt know what ther doing and is quite bad quality and i cant risk buying a bad host right now. I am now being DDoS'd and the host doesnt seem to be able to do anything about it so its also important the host has good ddos protection for a big server. Can i please have some suggestions from you guys?
We can host your server at Precise Servers and give you 50% off your sever if you switch to us :)

I seriously need high quality reliable hosting with at least 10GB/s ddos protection not a bad host, if you honestly cant host my server properly for me please dont send me your company, this matters allot to me.

I agree they are very good but i need a 90 slot server and they only host up to 64 slot servers
You could just get a VPS from NFO instead.
You could just get a VPS from NFO instead.
You don't really get enough bandwidth
?
The bandwidth is overpriced IMO. You won't find many hosts willing to tank that amount of bandwidth anyway on a game server because 10Gbps (commit) - even with great rates during end of year specials from HE and other carriers - is still in the ~$5000-$10000 month range. I would recommend either going with third party mitigation services such as http://zbode.com/ or using a provider like LSN or ReliableSite who have DDoS protection. LSN can block 20Gbps for up to one hour at a time for $100/month/IP and ReliableSite charges around $289/month for 10Gbps protection. You'll also probably want to ask if they use in house mitigation or if they use a third party such as Black Lotus as this can drastically affect the ping on your server if it has to go 20ms-40ms to the filter from their network. It's important to note with NFO that most of their locations only have 20Gbps capacity and some only have 10Gbps. They might be willing to tank the hits for you in their 20Gbps locations, but if it's a constant thing they will probably drop you at some point due to the cost involved.
Ok basically i need a server setup for me with a control panel ftp and brwser console, standard. It also needs good ddos prot, mabye not all dedicated for my server but overall, need to be stable and not crash allot and be able to handle 90 players, some hosts do this but lie about their features and it turns out almost anyone can ddos you. The only issue with my server now is it being ddosed occasionally and about 1 crash per day.
I consider the bandwidth to be worth it considering how helpful nfo staff have been in the past with mitigating attacks. They may not offer DDoS protection as a service, but they do go above and beyond helping mitigate attacks. There's a reason they host an overwhelming majority of the top gmod servers. It's certainly not a terribly fair comparison, but when you compare NFO bandwidth rates with the amount DDoS mitigation providers charge for clean bandwidth -- it's dirt cheap.
You think i can arrange a 90 slot server with NFO? because as far as i can see they only do up to 64 slots
Just open up a ticket and see what they say. John or Brendan or someone else on the support team might be able to work something out with you.
Do i need to learn new skills to be able to manage a machine via remote desktop without a control panel or is it straiht forward, so far i have worked with ftp and control panel but im not sure how an unmanaged VPS will go?

The only difference is that if you don't install a control panel it requires you to RDP in each time to make changes and you'll be in charge of grabbing all the server files via SteamCMD and so on. You can always lease / purchase a control panel from your favourite provider My only concern is are you sure you're being targeted? Network graphs would go a long way in proving if you are.
If you host 15th biggest in gmod, you should have regular donations. Therefore you should have enough funds for a dedicated server, with ddos protection.
ElpisHost is good
I am hosting my Garry's Mod server on the E3-1270 dedicated server over at NFO and I hit 100/100 daily, they seem to be dealing with attacks nicely.
I do get allot from donations and i can afford quite allot for this however im worried ill waste my money because this is really a hit and miss if im gonna be able to work it properly, im gonna give NFO a go and try one of ther VPS's and see what i can do
You should get a Linux Dedicated Server with an E3-1270 or better CPU. That E3 will be able to handle those 90 players if the server is optimized. Most of the bigger hosters have a good setup of hardware firewalls and DDoS mitigration as a last resort.
