Well, I've been looking on the forums (I'm planning on buying the game soon), and I frequently see references hinting that a large percentage of the game is made up of really young kids (-14 years). Is this exaggerated or true?
I've also heard that voice chat in some rp servers is disabled in order to preserve the role playing aspect of the game. Is this because there are so many squeaky voiced kids playing this game?
Most likely true. The smart ones keep to their own servers, probably.
Yes, that is correct.
^That sucks.
The ones who get noticed the most because they're the 12-year-olds grasping for attention. The mature ones generally keep to themselves.
Corky is correct. IMHO, the best part of the game is being on a server with friends that you've at least played with before. In practice, sandbox games with strangers rarely turn out well.

That's pretty true. I remember when playing GTA IV with random people, they would often through insults and racial slurs at each other like monkeys throwing poop.
I'm hoping to find some decent people to play with though. I'll be getting the game (along with my new pc) in about a month, so if anybody wants to play, I'll be down. I'm looking forward to rping, since I do that in almost all of the other games I have.
14-16 is the majority.

Alright that's good then.
Yes.
They are.
Ever play pokemon?
Ever get one of those really rare cards in a pack?
Out of the population of kids on gmod, there are about 20 out of 10000 that can form a coherent sentence.
I'm special, because I happen to fit into that category.
Here is the summary for what you should expect:
Prepare for 10 year old spittle flying against their mic; subsequently raping your ears.
Prepare for legitimately following the server rules then getting yelled at by a 11 year old admin abuser.
Prepare for getting killed nonstop in RP.(By kids)
Prepare for the storm of amazingly dumbshit insults these kids manage to make up, besides the o-so-racist ones.
Not really, its an exagerration on the part of the lesser minded people. Yes, it is annoying hearing their voice over voice-chat, but in some respects they have right to play aswell. The only real problem besides the migraine you will develop, is that the younger ones(-14) is they dont have respect for anyone.
To answer the question, the demographic is more or less idiots, some good some abd, people who like goofing off, people who like to seriously build/wire/code/map, and little kids.
I never did understand why some kid with a high pitched voice always makes everyone's ears bleed. I'm not high-pitched, but I don't have issues with a high pitch either (until they start screaming anyway)
I've seen a lot of pre-pubescent 11 year olds who make giant wired dicks out of PHX props.

This.
When I first started playing Gmod, my voice was still high, and after listening to the high pitch whiners that are always around, I made sure that I did NOT use my mic at all. I only use it sparingly, still, because I have one of those voices that doesn't sound good over the internet.
Because I am a nice person and I respect other people's ears.
It appears that one of the biggest issues here is having to listen to someone else's annoying voice. In that case, mute them. You wouldn't be missing out on anything important since all they do is blabber on all the time.

Ever heard Zoey's scream from L4D?

Its the same thing, high pitch annoying, borderline shudder inducing, besides a high voice is the sign that someone is generally going to be an idiot or annoying, not always but likely.

That's a SCREAM. Not normal speech.
I'm 12, although I keep to my self. When I do play a server, I tend to be quiet and just build. And when my friends are on, I USE MY PHONE to talk to them, so no one complains.

I think that's taking it too far. People will be able to discern that you are young, but if you speak in a serious tone and act mature, then they'd have no reason to bother you even if your voice is relatively high. And if they do, screw 'em.
...That is, if you are in fact 12 years old.

Or a girl. It's hard to tell the difference between a 15-17 year old girl and a pre-pubescent boy.

...Your honour.
Nah, I'm just messing around.
The demographic for GMod seems to be 10-20. I think it would be better if it was 15/16-20 rather than that, but meh. As long as no-one minges on the server, then I don't really care about how old they are. Unless they have a really irritating squeaky voice. That really annoys me. And ridiculously young admins are also annoying. I was once banned from this kid's server for demoting him (DarkRP. Pretty much says it all, huh?) because he was running around killing everyone. There should be an age limit for running a server.
I was once banned from this kid's server for demoting him (DarkRP. Pretty much says it all, huh?) because he was running around killing everyone.
I don't understand. You had the power to demote him, yet he was still able to ban you from the server?
Don't forget the players who never speak at all and come at you swinging props if you walk into their territory.
I don't understand. You had the power to demote him, yet he was still able to ban you from the server?
It was a demotion vote, which any player can do. Everyone voted yes, so he must have been doing something wrong.
From what I've seen the average age of the average Facepuncher is about fifteen. But do we have a sizeable amount of prepubescent boys playing the game?
Almost certainly.
It's easy to tell who's 12 years old; they mistake swearing for wit.
This is what's bringing the game down in a way, young kids.
People who go on servers, spam a bunch, say "plz" instead of typing 3 extra letters, and worship call of duty.
Sorry for steroeotyping the younger audience, but really, are they ever any different?
These are the people who camp on garrysmod.org pasting kirks they saved into a notepad, slagging off anything that doesn't include the terms "modern warfare" or "weapon pack" and try to be internet tough guys.
Only if you've watched a bustling, helpfull and fun server get raided by the this kind of person can you fully understand how much of a problem they are. Especially if it's your server that you payed good money for.
As an extra shot of controversy, it would appear that they are almost always german or polish. (just had to)
Their are people as young as 8 (and even, I dare say, younger) playing this game, and that in my eyes is just not cricket.
Although I can't deny that garrysmod is actually sort of educational if you look at it in the right way, the imagery of sliding props and whatnot has definately helped me with my physics understanding, and the early versions of wire gave me a very good knowledge of logic and gates, therefore made my course in electronics easy as ever. This in a way does help the younger audience, but the day you fire up garrysmod at school would hopefully be coincident with the rapture.
I think i may have gone slightly off topic.
Whatever happened to the term mingebag? Is it considered old now?
I still use the term 'mingebag', though I often shorten it to just 'minge'. I've actually started collecting the names and Steam IDs of annoying minges on other servers so I can pre-ban them on my own server as a sort of preventative measure. It may not be the best policy, but it certainly keeps the minges at bay.
...Your honour.
Feel free to rate me dumb, but I don't get this.

I like this strategy. I like it a lot.

It's like 'your honour' as in a courtroom setting. You know, because he said he couldn't tell the difference between older girls and younger boys. It's a crappy joke I know, but I try and work with that I'm given.

Good thing you're willing to admit it sucked, because I still don't get it. lol
It was a really sucky joke. He said "It's hard to tell the difference between a 15-17 year old girl and a pre-pubescent boy.", which I intentionally misinterpreted as a courtroom statement.
