A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away..... a bunch of nerds on the internet banded together in an epic quest to create a Star Wars MMORPG inside of garrysmod, today their work is known as SWO, or Star Wars Online, and, with development still in progress, users across the galaxy found A New Hope.
FAQ
[release]
What is it?
SWO is not a roleplay game in the traditional garrysmod sense. When you play it, it will feel like an MMORPG. Your HUD, controls, combat, etc, will all function like an MMO. It's important to understand this because when you play this gamemode, it will not feel like Half Life 2.
So then will there be roleplay elements?
Absolutely! We will not limit your capability in the mod as far as roleplay goes, you can feel free to talk and interact with other players and there will be prescripted ways in which you can do this. While you won't be running around with a gravity/physics gun in your hands buying doors, you can still do things with other players.
What will combat be like?
Combat will function like just about every other MMORPG out there, not like standard HL2 combat. That means that combat will largely consist of PvE, or player versus environment interaction. This will entail targeting an NPC and then you, the player will be required to either click on your target to add a basic attack to the action queue or to use one of your skill attacks instead, and add that to the queue. The action queue is a list of events you want to happen in combat, the game will cycle through your actions with consistent pauses between each one until all queued actions are complete or your enemy dies.
Will there be PvP (player versus player) Combat?
Yes. PvP will be allowed with the consent of both players involved. You will be able to target another player and request a duel with them, which is PvP combat between the two of you. The other form of PvP combat will be seen in the galactic struggle between the Imperial Empire and the Rebellion. If you are part of either faction and you set yourself to be a combatant, you will be subject to attacks from players of the other faction who have set themselves to be combatants. This means that you could be attacked anywhere with this setting enabled. You can switch between combatant mode and being 'safe' with a simple command, but it will not allow users to spam toggle it.
How will death work?
If you ever run out of health you will become incapacitated. This means that you are essentially unable to do anything for a period of aproximately 30 seconds. When you awaken, you will have 1 health and a penalty to your stats for a period of time unless you're healed. Should you get to 0 health while this penalty still applies, you will die. Death means that a clone of yours will be activated in the cloning station of a nearby town that you can select. You will retain all of your belongings. The downside to death, like incapacitation, is a massive penalty to your stats for a period of time unless you're healed. The good news, is that at each cloning station will be a droid that will heal you, the bad news is that you'll need to pay for this service.
What kinds of quests will there be?
Honestly, we haven't though that far ahead. You will be able to go through a large number of quests, some of them semi-randomly generated, others, completely prescripted. The randomly generated quests will entail everything from kill quests to fetch quests and more. The scripted ones will be more story based and involve more involved goals. Be prepared to wander through and clear out bunkers!
What kinds of professions/classes and weapons are there?
All professions listed on this piece of software will be added (except the force professions [maybe at a later time they'll be available, but not for release] and image designer)
The program will also be able to show you, to a degree what kinds of weapons you're likely to see in-game, as well as the names of several skills and abilities.
So why is this file called "Kodans SWG ProfCalc"?
The game that this gamemode is being based off of is called Star Wars Galaxies, the MMORPG that Sony released several years ago. We will be using the pre-NGE (New Game Engine) version of this game as our base, and altering various things to make them generally more fun. This game will not be a clone of SWG, however it will be similar, as it will be similar to every other RPG ever made. The one major element that we're 'stealing' from SWG is it's profession system. We decided to do this because SWG always had a special feel to it; it was the only MMORPG where you built specific areas of your skillsets based on what actions you did. You have to shoot creatures with a pistol to get pistol experience to advance in your pistol skills, etc.
Wait, what? A Star Wars game without the force?!?!?
Exactly. Think about it, if you give a lightsaber to every single player, it won't be special. Instead, you get to develop your skills like a pseudo-real person and play as someone who could actually exist in the star wars universe. By ensuring that your character can both be heroic and not have it feel like everyone starts that way (as a jedi) we hope to make the game more fun. For those of you who really would like to become jedi, we will likely be updating the game after release to include the ability to become a force sensitive (note, not a jedi, jedis are trained). If you achieve a certain number of specific tasks in the game, with the approval of a moderator, you will be able to become a force sensitive. The requirements for this will never be posted anywhere, so don't ask; what we will be able to tell you, at a later date, is what the force sensitives will be able to do. We don't want to give away all our plans just yet, but what we can tell you is that you will be able to persue the light or dark sides of the force, or even maintain a balance between the two.
What species will be available for play?
Wookies, Humans, Twi'lek, Trandoshen, Zabrak, Bothan, Mon Calamari, Bith, Rodian and Ithorian will be available for play. Note: Not all species will be available at the initial release time.
While we will be allowing you to choose certain elements of your character's appearance, your species, your gender, etc, understand that there will not be a great amount of customization in the making of your human character look different than the next human character; that's just how it has to be. That being said, we are planning on having a large variety of clothing options for your character, with which you can set yourself apart from the crowd.
When does the game take place?
The game will take place in the 5 year time span between the destruction of the two death stars. The Empire is fighting a costly galactic civil war, something which players will be able to take a part in in-game.
Where will the game take place?
The game will take place on several planets found in the Star Wars universe, some will be from the movies, some may not be. Tatooine will definitely be featured, as for the other planets, we have yet to decide what they will be. Feel free to make suggestions.
Will I be able to host this gamemode on my server?
In short, no. The majority of all of the SWO servers (if not all of them) will be hosted by developers. We may or may not give expressed permission to specific individuals outside the team to host servers, the source code will not be available for the general public. SWO is licensed by Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License In a nutshell: If you steal or host this gamemode you will be punished by full extent of the law and due to international copywrite laws, this applies to anybody anywhere in the world.
Will I be required to pay anything?
No, but we may be accepting donations at a later
Hey, that looks pretty good!
So...
New thread?
The old one wasn't able to be modified by the entire board of directors which led to less being posted than should've been. This one also contains more information.
YYYYYYYYYYEEEEERRREEH!
As long as I get a lightsaber,I'm very,VERY happy.
Is this mixed RP-MMORPG,MMORPG,or RP?
It is mostly MMORPG with a few RP elements.
OMFG!!
This sounds really awesome, and I fucking love you for not giving out lightsabers like free candy :D I'm tired of those stereotypical star wars games/movies where the all-good jedi fight against the super-evil sith.
Besides, jedi/sith were extremly rare during the Galactic Civil War :p
I'll be waiting for this :)
Sweet. new thread.
Still here... stalking your threads.
Awesome... what's that circular thing? A mine or some sort f money? >.>
A mine.
i would really love to be a stormtrooper :D
When i saw these pictures, i was amazed by how detailed they where. Keep me updated if you can, cant wait. o and will there be a death star and/or space?
[editline]08:52PM[/editline]
sorry for asking about the death star, but add different types of storm troopers if you could, like dark troopers or like a commanders in the grey outfits. any way keep it up, i cant wait till the release
You won't be able to be a storm trooper per say, however you will be able to get the storm trooper armor if you're an Imperial.
The death star will not be a playable area.
Looks good, but you should try and do the terrain, because it looks abit flat?
armor is good enough for me :D
Have u started work on any other maps yet ?
Looks good, but you should try and do the terrain, because it looks abit flat?
If you have actually watched StarWars, Tatooine in the city is supposed to be flat.. its a Desert....
Have u started work on any other maps yet ?
No.
Your models need ALOT of work.
Some of the model pictures posted are, early snapshots of the models, they have since been improved and worked on. As for the other things that someone could view as 'flaws', they will be handled in their textures. Don't worry.
Will Some of the Combat be First-Person-Shooter Like? Say, if I'm a marksman, wanting to kill a guy with one shot, it'd actually be possible to do that instead of dealing a predetermined amount of damage?
The amount of damage you do will depend on your skills as well as some random values. To kill someone in one shot, you could use a special ability that does an exceptional amount of damage.
Can't wait to play it, big fan of starwars :]
ok sounds good to me, just a suggestion, could you maybe put the imperials w/ the gray khakis on, and you could control storm trooper npcs, number of them depending on ur level? and make that hard to get too. cant wait till its done
There will be no abilities involving the direct control of NPCs, there may be ones to distract them, but that's about as far as it will go. Standard Imperial garb will be available for players who have advanced far enough in the Imperial faction.

But the question was if you could fire weapons as if it was an FPS. Which is what I'd like to know too.
No. They will not, read the FAQ question on combat. You will need to click to shoot, but it will not be an instant "you click you fire" system; instead you will add an attack action to the queue of actions to be done, and when it's that action's turn to run, it will make the appropriate effects/damage occur.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-
Oh well, there goes my hopes. Have fun with your run-of-the-mill MMO. :D
Okay, sorry. I understand that you've been working hard on this, but what you described has already been done over, and over, and over again. For some reason, I was imagining a Real Time MMORPGFPS. A tall order, but what I've seen somehow made me think that was what you were going for.
Run-of-the-mill in some ways, yes, in others, not so much. For instance, there are no levels what so ever. Instead, we feature an advancement box system, which lets you advance your character through the practice of a specific skill. SWG Pre-NGE was the only MMORPG ever to implement this system and it worked excellently.
What I will say everything however, is that nothing is set in stone at the moment except for the small amount of things that have been coded. The reason for this, is that we like to flesh out the basic ideas in advance, but when it comes time to actually implement a feature, we may alter it a little after putting more thought into it, combat is no exception to this process; ie: if we see a lot more replies asking for FPS style combat, it's not out of the question and we may talk about using that instead.
This looks really good!
