Noob question about Gmod, and what other source games will add

Okay, so I have DOD and TF2 already, and I've been looking at gmod.

Does the amount of content you have in gmod (weapons/NPCs/other) depend on owning the game that it was in originally?

I own the orange box on my 360 and it would be a huge pain to have to buy it again on steam for NPCs/weapons.

CS:S would help a lot. Portal stuff too. You can check what games and which ones you have in the mount tab or something.
When you get a game you can take props and ragdolls a.s. from those games. I think you get the CS:S weapons when you get CS:S too... Or am I mistaken?
There are no NPC's to get from those games, though- except for HL2EP1/2 NPCs, but NPCs from just about any source game can be downloaded via garrysmod.org.
