I'm running a dedicated server and was wondering, why does the server need the material files? I can understand needing them to upload to the client but for things like PHX it doesn't send the vtf files to the client or anything for that matter so would it be safe to remove the materials/ folder in various things for some extra space?
Thats like saying why does it need the map.
I can understand why it needs the map. But the vmt/vtf files are only used on the clients for rendering, the server does nothing with them.
I think you can safely remove the .vtf files and keep the .vmt files. If you look at the HL2 materials folder on your server, you'll see there's only vmt files there.
Well I went through and removed all the material folders from my addons (vmt's included) and restarted the server and it works :D
From what I can tell as long as the map doesn't make use of the material it isn't needed. (Moved my ep2/materials and loaded a ep2 map to test this and got spammed with ONLY missing .vmt errors so you could probably remove the vtf's like Bloodclaw said also)
Removing the Wire & PHX material folders can give you a gig of HDD space back.
