I just want to know a way to create a multiplayer server on gmod without paying any money. I asked a friend and he said that a source dedicated server has a monthly fee, so is that true?? I already tried some tutorials, but I couldn't get any to work.
If it helps, I'm using a linksys wireless router.
Your friend is an idiot, Source Dedicated Server is a free download from the tools tab on Steam.
There are companies and community groups that offer to host your server.. and THAT is for a fee. But if you want to host it at home, on your own computer, that's absolutely free, except for energy and internet costs.
I've found home-hosting perfectly fine, though somewhat unreliable... wifi and all. Most people get a ping of 40-80 if they live in Europe. I guess it depends on your situation. If you can keep a computer on wired Ethernet running all night with fast speed, then that's very good.
With payed services, you sometimes get a much more reliable service, as they are hosted in high speed data centres, purposefully built for servers.
