Hi
I have a strange bug on gmod. I always get between 10 and 25 fps.
My computer is a good one (Crysis with hight settings run perfectly).
I tried to reinstall gmod, without addons, and I put all settings at low, but I still got low fps.
When I take the camera swep (screenshot thing), I get 40 fps. I don't understand why this swep fix the bug when I take it.
Any solution to fix low fps?
Thanks.
I kinda had the same problem. Just run a virus scan, defrag your hard drive, update your drivers, and set CPU speed to very high (if it isnt already). All this really helped me. And if you have tons of addons, gmod may lag.
First of all we need specs, not oh my computer can run Crysis good.

And what the fuck?
No Overclocking does not help, go away.
As above.

If anything overclocking can cause instability. (if done incorrectly)
Crysis is less stressful than Garry's Mod. Processors and RAM are what count in GMod, not a video card that can run 'Crysis good'
My computer specs :
CPU : Q6600 3.2ghz (overcloked).
RAM : 4GB Corsair DDR2 833Mhz.
GPU : Nvidia 9800 GTX 512MB.
HDD : 1.8TB (500*3 + 320) SATA II.
MB : ABIT AB9 PRO.
The wierd thing is that when I take the camera swep, my fps up to 40. And when I change to another tool/swep, it drop at 10-25 fps.
update GPU drivers.
My PC is updated. Every drivers, Windows update, addons ...
But it doesn't change anything.
I've got similar, at gm_construct I would get 40 FPS but when someone spawns like 3 props my FPS will drop to 10-20.
try disabling multicore rendering.
Any addons installed?

Like I said, I tried without any addons ;). Same problem.
I disabled the multicore rendering. It didn't change anything.
Ah, something new, I get 60 fps when I'm in the Escape menu.
I'm having the same exact problem.
Sometimes everything is fine, no problems at all.
But then again, my FPS drops below 10 every 5 seconds, then goes up again, drops again, goes up again, drops again etc etc.
I tried setting everything to minimum. No change.
Clearing/Defragging Ram. No change.
Defrag Gmod, Defrag HHD. No change either.
As him, the problem is gone as soon as I hit Esc and enter the main menu.
In order to get some info about it, I put net_graph 4, and that was uite interresting. When everything is smooth, the graph stays low, but every 5 seconds, the "entity" color in the graph goes BOOM and i get values of up to 3000. Sorry but I actually don't know what this value stands for.
Anyways, my drivers are all updated, and my PC should be able to handle this EASILY.
Athlon X2 4,4ghz Dual-core
NVidia Geforce 285 GTX
4 GB of 400Mhz Ram
I really dont get it. I tried every guide to increase performance out there, absolutely nothing helps.
Edit : Oh yeah, and I'm running absolutely NO background processes besides critical system ones.
I believe that the HUD (hidden in camera/pause) has an overlay that is not visible, but still rendered. Most likely it's post-processing.
If it's the hud, why does my net_graph then show heavily increased activity in the "entity" category when it lags?

Everything on a map is an entity. Net_graph shows how expensive a particular resource is, which almost everything is an entity of a type. (props, doors, lights)
I was able to fix this with a complete reinstall of all my graphic card, cpu and mainboard drivers. Yay!
Well, I tried to reinstall all my drivers, but nothing change :< .
I'm getting this problem, too. I heard that it's being caused by a recent update garry added while trying to make Gmod compatible with Macs...
It's all the in-game clutter (HUD, spawned weapons and props, NPCs) that cause the FPS to lower to an extreme amount. By switching to the camera tool, it gets rid of your HUD and such so that some clutter goes away and causes the FPS to rise. I recommend that you clean up your addons folder from any addons that you hardly use, and you might see a rise in the FPS during play.
He said multiple times he doesnt have any addons installed.
Go to Taskmanager, Right click gmod and set priority to (very) high.
Go to the spawn menu, post processing, disable all.
I decided to try the thing where you give Gmod priority in Task Manager...it improved the FPS slightly...but it's still really low. There's another problem, as well: Anti-Aliasing is broken. No matter what adjustments I make, the anti-aliasing no longer works.

What is mat_dxlevel set to? mat_antialias? mat_aaquality?
Im not sure what those are...
What's the map?
All of them.

I tried with all settings at minimal, nothing changed ...
I have this problem even if no props/npcs are spawned.
And I got this problem for ... mounths.
I had to change my motherboard and my graphic card recently. Nothing changed.
A number of people seem to be getting this now...someone call Garry and tell him he just broke something big for a few of us...
