I'm a newbie when it comes to actually roleplaying, but I do understand that there is in-character and out-of-character chat, that servers have jobs, and that there are 2 kinds of servers (serious and "not-so-serious"--like DarkRP?). I tried joining an RP server once, but once I got connected, I had no idea what to do. I would like to become part of the RP community, but I seriously don't know how.
Any advice on how RP Servers generally operate and how to start playing would be greatly appreciated.
Also, where can I find a list of good servers? (for both types, if it exists)
EDIT: Forgot to mention: What are some of the commonly used / thingys? All I know is /ic and /ooc.

Well, there are plenty of different commands a normal RP Gamemode has.
OOC (Out-Of-Character)
IC (In-Character)
ME (Your actions)
ROLL (Rolling is mostly for serious RP's, such as OpenAura.)
First of all I suggest you find a good community hosting a roleplay server that your interested in. Then post on your forums to introduce yourself. Just basically go up to someone and say "Hello" or something along the lines of that to get a RP conversation going, or just attend a server event if the server has them.
Heres another command that wasn't mentioned yet and is on some servers.
/it describes an event, for example /it A splatter of blood can be seen on the wall.
/roll can be used to settle RP fights, for example Bob would go /me attempts to punch Joe in the face.
Then we'd both roll, if I get the highest number the action succeeds, if I don't then he dodges. /roll isn't used that way in most serious RP servers though, so its mainly used for gambling.
This will be a huge waste of time for you. Serious RP is restrictive and somewhat competetive, you will also have to sit around and chat for up to 90 percent of your playing time, it's called passive RP.
"Semi serious" rp will turn into a deathmatch round but with the spawns are all in one place and you don't spawn with guns resulting in rape.
