• Horrible FPS in MP
    19 replies, posted
I just recently installed Gmod again and attempted to join a friends server. Upon getting in the server I get 8 fps. When I look off map my fps goes up to 40. When I play Single Player, I get 40 fps without having to look off map. The game runs as expected in SP; but MP is unplayable due to horrible FPS drops down to 8-ish. (I run the game in DirectX 8 mode) All my drivers are up to date. Even with a clean install of Gmod with no addons installed it still does this. Video Card: Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family There you've got it.
I get 40 fps while building at 60 fps on an empty map. I already know I have a horrible gfx card. MP shouldn't put that much extra strain on the video card.
When you have a shit video card anything will put an extra strain on it. Since your graphics card is integrated it's already sucking on your measly 2GB of ram, and your processor is pretty old and slow.
Yeah. Since your on a laptop you should turn your settings way down.
Already did, none of the settings effect my FPS at all except screen resolution. I run at 800 x 600 instead of 640 x 480 because Gmod does not support 640 x 480 screen resolution well.

Define what?
Why doesn't 640x480 work well?
Set your screen resolution to it and bring up the spawn menu and tell me how it works out for you.
Set your screen resolution to it and bring up the spawn menu and tell me how it works out for you.
Fun fact is. I have before and it was fine.(back on my rig when it was running)
Fun fact, we're getting horribly off-topic. This still doesn't fix my MP fps.
Get a better computer.
My laptop has an Intel 965GM. One way you can increase the FPS slightly is by setting r_farz to a number (like 2500). However, that's a cheat command, so you need to be on a server with sv_cheats set to 1. (Also, if you crash because of gunshots, explosions and Hunters [the NPC], then you need to set r_drawparticles to 0 - which is also a cheat command)

Already did. Read OP.
Your best option is to get a better computer. It's already ill equipped to run the game and upgrading it would just be a waste of money.
Can't upgrade laptops. And buying a new computer is not an option at the time.
What gamemode(s) are you playing?
Sandbox w/ Spacebuild and Sandbox w/o any addons. Both get the same fps in MP. I tried r_farz 2500 and found that it didn't help at all. I'm starting to think it's not the video card. How much extra CPU power does it take to sync stuff online?
