i bought garrys mod and i get the error "a source engine game is requried to run mods" and i looked around and i found that my copy of portal 2 for ps3 came with a coupon for portal 2 for the pc will that fix my error?

It might work. Try linking your account or activating the key on steam first (I don't know how it works, but there might be a nice setup for it when you first start portal 2 on the ps3)

If you thought for at least 5 seconds before posting that, you'd know that this has nothing to do with pirating garrysmod, but not having any source engine games on your account other than garrysmod, which is required.

poo psn is down and i get claim my pc code it requires to link it with psn first

While it is a source game, it uses a different engine version and most likely won't be recognized.

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 do work though, as they have the flag "Includes source sdk" in the steam store, while for Portal 2 I don't know.
I know you just bought it, but wow... you have perpetually failed.
Garrys mods page has a list of games that work. Why didn't you read that?

It will, it should include Source SDK.
Brandon, you should buy Counter-Strike Source, it's very important for GMod, it has A LOT of commonly used models included.

That bundle includes the original portal, which WILL work. So no, it won't work until you're credit card stops having a stroke and you get portal or CSS or something.

You shouldn't have been able to buy Garrysmod as you're required to own a (purchased and compatible) source game before doing so.
But, if you're going to buy a source game, buy CS:S - [URL]http://store.steampowered.com/app/240/[/URL] . Without it you're going to encounter quite a few problems in game. In fact, I have a giftable copy of CS:S (added you via steam).

That doesn't matter. The Portal 2 subscription includes the SDK bases which is all Garry's Mod requires.
Out of curiosity, how did you buy gmod without owning another source game? You can't buy it on steam by itself unless you own a source game, it will come bundled with CSS. There is no retail version.... hmmm...

I ended up thinking 5 seconds afterwards.
I coulda sworn steam required you to own a game with source sdk base before you could buy Garry's Mod.
