When I launch GMod, I get the background picture of the menu screen, then it crashes. Nothing shows up indicating that there was an error. I have reinstalled multiple times, I have cleaned out my folders, and I have tried typing in -fullscreen in the launch options. I have no mods installed either.
The game worked without a problem in the past.
EDIT: I just noticed that this topic has been posted, but none of the solutions seemed to have worked.
Are you familiar with regedit at all?
Not really. Can you please explain? I think I have a basic understanding.
Well, seeing as you're using XP and I'm on 7, things might be slightly different. To add, I haven't fully used that OS in years.
Win key + R
Type in regedit (one word)
Press Enter
On the left, you'll see 5 folders in a tree. Open up the HKEY_CURRENT_USER one.
Click Software, then Valve, then source. Right click the garrysmod folder, delete it. Run GMod, report status.
This clears out the graphics properties, along with a few other misc things that could cause your gmod to fail.
Thanks for the help, but it still doesn't seem to work. I get the same error.
Betcha its the last update.
Is it possible for me to use an older version of GMod?
Try updating your video drivers maybe? That's just a guess though...one of the previous updates caused a problem like this but it was fixed pretty quickly. So updating your graphics drivers would be my only guess.
GMod 9 is avail but it's so old.

And not supported
I moved all of my steam data to another drive, could that have caused an issue?
Oh sorry guys. I was a bit unaware of a file I had installed. It was metamod.vdf and it was left in the back of my mind. I apologize for this mistake. Thanks for your help and have a wonderful day.

So your saying that the addon is what is screwing it up? Hmm, I might try moving all the addons to a separate folder and then see if gmod runs, becuase I have the same PC as you, but it is Windows media edition.... I Have noticed when starting up counterstrike: source that it says my graphics card needs an update or something
Yeah. I got it fixed by removing the file. Apparently it was outdated or something.
