I've just joined a server, on a map I thought was city 45. How can I take this seriously?
"I'll post it on Facepunch and circlejerk about it!"
Decompile it, edit it and run it on your server, then see the fail DMCA from gmod.biz.
Or just shut up and ignore it and stop deliberately causing drama over something extremely trivial, if this genuinely bothers you, you need help.
Or just shut up and ignore it and stop deliberately causing drama over something extremely trivial, if this genuinely bothers you, you need help.
It bothers me that other peoples work is being edited and having a big 'Made by Me' tag on it.
Or just shut up and ignore it and stop deliberately causing drama over something extremely trivial, if this genuinely bothers you, you need help.
It's not about causing drama, it's about the fact that someone thinks he has legal right over everything he touches and he needs to learn how the world really turns.
"The original of this map belongs to their respective owners." Speaks for itself.
Be thankful that only looks like a 3D2D display and isn't made from the fucking brushwork itself like most mappers who insist on plastering their name over maps do.
Be thankful that only looks like a 3D2D display and isn't made from the fucking brushwork itself like most mappers who insist on plastering their name over maps do.
It's in the map.
Or just shut up and ignore it and stop deliberately causing drama over something extremely trivial, if this genuinely bothers you, you need help.
If I were the guy who made the map I'd be extremely bothered. As it is, it's just making gmod.biz and whatever the name of the company behind them is called look like a bunch of retards.
I'm pretty sure in the general rules of copyright, you can't add a few changes to a work then call it your own.
I'm pretty sure in the general rules of copyright, you can't add a few changes to a work then call it your own.
The mapper quit GMod long time ago.
The mapper quit GMod long time ago.
Doesn't matter. Copyright last for quite some time. Just because the director of a film long since died doesn't mean the film is public domain yet. In fact, films made 45 years ago are only just entering public domain as copyright has expired. maps are intellectual property of the same level and are therefore stuck with the same rules unless the designer specifies otherwise.
It's in the map.
Could be 3D2D added in on map load. You know, like most 3D2D notices are?
It's just making gmod.biz and whatever the name of the company behind them is called look like a bunch of retards.
Isn't that what they are anyway?

Probably wrong because legal jargon makes little to no sense to me, but I believe that applies to things like steam, their games, the SDK and tools etc. If it does apply to the maps then they'd still be at fault. FYI, pre snip content from above poster:
you guys need to check the SSA more often tl;dr: valve owns your maps
Just like any other business, Gmod.biz is pretty much completely devoid of any moral compass of any sort. Of course, we already knew that... Since Valve owns everything, then you can just run it on your server and watch as they are completely helpless just to piss them off...
If I had made something and then somebody came along, added a funny hat and copyrighted it, I'd be pretty annoyed.
If I had made something and then somebody came along, added a funny hat and copyrighted it, I'd be pretty annoyed.
This happens a lot in real life. "Patent trolls" go around looking for inventions waiting for a patent and patent it before the creator, allowing them to sue them.
i sent a nice little email to the legal department at valve on the matter of maps because im tired of this so its ok
You'll probably find they will dumb it down a ton. But it should come out as something along the lines of you owning the ideas and the design of the map. But Valve owning the object of the map as it uses their resources and their tools or something.
yeah, that's what I'm thinking.. resources belong to them (which means the map in "physical" form), but you own the idea and rights for it, sort of [editline]11th June 2011[/editline] we'll see if/when I get a reply
I lol at the fact that they think they're on such a top level of superiority, they need to put their location down just for a gmod map.

The last enquiry I had with them didn't actually involve Valve (it was related to a game of theirs though), but they gladly helped me and gave me what I needed.
Way to do good to your already bad reputation biz, ya friggin' idiots.
While I do not not normally support Hoeffner and his "company" what they did here isn't really wrong. I spoke to Dave who was in charge of the community at the time of the original map. And he told me that decompiling the map was ok. However I don't like the label biz puts on it. claiming copyright is nonsense anyway
You can't claim copyright on work that isn't your own creation. This is not their own creation.
Technically they shouldn't be able to claim copyright over anything on Gmod.
Technically they shouldn't be able to claim copyright over anything on Gmod.
Depends really. For maps, you own the IP of the design but not the map itself. For lua, you own the IP of the scripts. Original models, you own the entire IP.
