The in-game console recorder for Gmod has been broken for a long time. Is it going to be fixed any time soon or are the people who use it for videos going to be royally screwed?
FYI this needs to be posted in Help & Support.
I really want Source Recorder to be fixed like, right NOW.

It has. By many people. Many times.
It worked fine for me
It's not broken
Well I probably should've phrased it better. It's not the actual recorder itself that's broken, rather the demo rendering process. WHen you want to render your video clips, you type "startmovie <videoname> avi" into the console, which brings up a little window that lets you select what codec you want the clip to be rendered as. Now when you type that code in, the window doesn't pop up, which screws up the whole thing.
All I'm asking is that Garry at least look into the problem.
I've got this too, the window to select the codec doesn't appear.
Team Fortress 2 has the same error.
Its called the source recorder. Which means source engine controls it.
Are you lot really to stupid to learn a basic chain of command? Garry uses the mainstream engine so he does not modify it, Valve has broke it, not him.

Not quite. It works with certain source engine games. As I said, the hatless update broke it in tf2, that update was for tf2 ONLY, not the engine and it still broke it. In other words yes this is Garry's mistake. Plenty of source games run it fine.

Cause other source games including tf2 run branches of the engine.

I don't have the image at hand but Yahn Bernier says they're fixing it with the next TF2 update
use TGAs in the meantime

Nope:

Well then, that's reassuring.
Any news? Or is it gonna be another 3 weeks? ¬¬

Gmod runs on the same engine as the hl2 games as far as I'm aware, they all work perfectly.
This sucks, I finally figured out how to use Source Recorder (by checking several tutorials), but when I try to record anything in Gmod, the game crashes when I use the "startmovie (name) avi" command.
The codec selection fails to show up, even after Alt+Tab, Source Recorder worked fine in Portal when I was testing it, but it seems like the Source games that get repeated updates might have a broken recorder now.
Valve needs to quit farting with the Source engine every other day and fix what they broke!
Well for now, I suggest you learn the TGA method with VirtualDub. FYI: When you import all your frames in VD, be sure to change your frame rate to 30(Like you did with the host_framerate command). I had Audio/Video sync problems without doing this..
You don't want to resort to FRAPS

Are you kidding? I have a 6301 frame GMod Video. Exporting all of that in TGA would be 6.3GB. I'm not clogging up my garrysmod folder/HDD with TGA's.

Well yes, that would be impossible, I mean for the short 1800 frame(Like a minute) vid I did with the TGA method(@ 1024x768 res) took up 4GB. :P
All these recent "snippet" updates since Gmod went down last weekend have given me false hopes.. :bang:
Any news on a Source Recorder fix, I would like to actually do some Gmod videos to show off some stuff with out having to resort to FRAPS on a Source engine game. There is no way I can use the TGA method since some of my raw videos will be long.
It's STILL broken? What the fuck?
Dont use it then.
Get XFire or Wegame or even Fraps.
XFire, Wegame, and Fraps dent both the quality and framerate of the video - avoid them if possible.
Temporary fix:
1. Record your demo.
2. Play it back and record this replay with a screen recorder of your choice.
3. ????
4. Profit!
If you really need to, just use the TGA export method as mentioned before. Yes it will take up a lot of space, though you can delete them right after you export some sort of video out of VirtualDub.
WeGame sucks donkey ballz now, the quality is worse than recording with a camera on the screen! :|
