i have enough money to buy gm but i dont want to have to buy te mods, and i wont play without them. i'm asking it before i buy the game
You need at least one Source-powered game for GMod to work properly, as it is not a full game (hence its name) and needs another game's stuff to work. As Team Fortress 2 is free, that's not a problem.
You don't need to pay for any of GMod's content, either. Anything required to play on a particular server will be downloaded for free when it's needed.
Short version: Get Team Fortress 2 as well as GMod and you'll be fine. You do not need to pay any more after buying GMod, and if someone tells you you do, they're pulling a fast one on you.
thank you for the information, i didn't want to waste my money buying the mods and i weren't going to play without anything. i've goy tf2 yet. so i will download gm now.

CS:S and HL2:EP2 aren't going to be downloaded if you join a server, and most servers need CS:S.

Fantastic news! A word of warning, though - a lot of servers use the items from Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source as well. So you may see a lot of flashing ERROR symbols until you have those too.
Also, HL2, TF2, Portal, L4D and CSS aren't mods, they're full-fledged games. GMod is the mod :)
EDIT; Damn it, Lexic got in before I could say that. Though more accurately, the servers don't need CS:S. You'll still be able to join them, you just won't be able to see the content that belongs to CSS. Similarly, anyone who doesn't yet own TF2 won't see any TF2 items you create, whereas you can. The more Source games you own, the more becomes available to you to play with in GMod.
You could also watch my two little introduction/tutorial videos here and here to get to grips with the basics of GMod's way of doing things.
I looked at your steam profile and noticed that you don't own Counter St5rike: Source. Not that it is required, but most ALL servers use the content from it, so I recommend one of 2 things:
Buy it on Steam
Download the content using SRCDS Update Tool
Most ALL servers I go to use CSS content, and without it you wont be able to see for crap. Once again, you NEED CSS if you want to play on MOST Gmod servers!
Just get HL2 and you are good
Just do what the rest of us do, go and torrent base gamemode so you dont have to pay for it after you have brought the game.
Im only joking, its all inclusive once you buy the game, some developers have features on their gamemode for vip only so thats about it.
Gaiz i piirated sandbox is that ok too expensive
once you've got enough money, go buy CS:S and HL2+EP1&2 as most stuff, either on servers or downloaded from garrysmod.org or toybox uses models or textures from those games
hell just buy every game that uses Source engine when you get the chance, you'll never have to worry about missing models again lol
Yep.
If you had to choose one, get CS:S. Everyone says TF2, but TF2 doesn't help you when it comes to needing textures. Plus, you get a better game with CS:S (let the dumb ratings flow).
Short version: Another purchase is not required for GMod, but it's recommended.
Long version: GMod is capable of using content from most Source games (including almost all Sourcemods - I think the only one we don't have currently is Portal 2). However, in order to use that content, you need to own those games (with the exception of HL2 - Valve lets anyone who owns any Source game have access to everything in HL2 except for the singleplayer maps needed to play through the campaign). CS:S is used pretty much everywhere, so that's priority one (as soon as you get the money of course), and TF2 is just as high up (but only because it's free to play now), then the Episodes (mostly EP2 though), then Portal. I'm not sure where Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 are in the list.

What.
Everyone says to get TF2 because it is free.

I'm almost absolutely sure we don't get textures from L4D and L4D2 being mounted.
By the way guys, I'm pretty sure he is referring to addons viz PHX, wire, etc.

Before it was free, everyone still suggested it. TF2 is a terrible game that was made terrible by greed. End of story.
portal is also free

I still wouldn't suggest TF2 unless you specifically want to make a TF2 machinima or something since it provides almost no useful textures.

This. I love TF2 but, it's really lacking in the GMod content. Since it's free it wouldn't hurt, but be sure to get Portal also.
