On YouTube you are allowed to revenue share video footage from games, if you have permission to do so. So my friend was wondering how this can be done? Is there a license or terms of use page?
You're free to do so on Garry's Mod videos. If you really want you, you can tweet or PM garry and ask for specific permission.
I pmed him, but he hasnt replyed :(
Btw you do know that you need permission for EVERYTHING in your video, all the music/images so if Nyan cat appears in your gmod you can't use that clip unless you have the rights to use nyan cat.
I knew that. But where on earth did you think I would mention something as random as nyan cat. (as cute as it is :3)
if your already a partner just enable revenue sharing on a video
Wouldn't they be able to tell that its game footage? BTW this is my friend we are talking about.
Garry is on holiday at the moment but as far as I know it's fine to use GMod in videos etc.
YouTube manually check revenue share videos, I think. If they were to see video game footage regardless if I don't need permission. They might tell me that they need me to clarify why I have the right to the content. And just saying that there is no license or terms of use would make them laugh. Have any of you successfully revenue shared a garrysmod video?
Haven't tried it, but while Garry may not have a problem with you doing it, you're still using assets created by Valve. So Garry would not be the only one you need permission from. You may not need permission from them at all, though I personally would rather be safe than sorry.
Where can I get these permissions? I heard maxofs2d gets away with it.
Just add a disclaimer at the end/in the description stating you don't own Garry's Mod, the Source Engine, Steam, (if you accidentally shift+tab etc) or any music or sounds used in the video. Annoys the shit out of youtube lawyers, but it lets your video through without problems. Email support@steampowered and ask if you can receive permission to revenue share on a video located at INVERT VIDEO URL HERE if you're that paranoid about youtube biting your foot about it.
I will give it a shot and get back to you.
I've already made a GMod video like ages ago. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHnIoPEmxVk Lol) But if you had to get permission for everything, then I had to ask IW and Garry for permission.
Who is IW? BTW uploading isn't an issue, its the revenue share review.
Infinity Ward.
If he doesn't reply do one of the basic business tactics when it comes to permissions and royalties. Say by not replying you'll assume that permission has been given unless replies are made stating otherwise.
It should be fine to use footage from the game, asking Garry for permission is obviously a better idea, then asking Valve themselves permission to use their assets inside the game to ensure you cannot have action taken against you. But as far as I have seen, it's largely things like Music, Pictures and Movies that they give a massive fuck about.

Technically it can be counted as a transformational media (especially because of all the user-added content), so I seriously doubt you'd get into any legal trouble. Just remember that showing someone else's gamemode and making it out to be your own isn't the best idea, and be careful when using music - use something like LapFoxTrax, as they allow you to use their music in videos even if you're generating profit from it.
Ok, one last thing. Would YouTube even recognise it a video game or would they pay no attention to the footage because it didn't match any id system or give the benefit of the doubt? [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline] When does Garry come back from vacation?
Be right back. Im just going to tell Garry to sue every 10 year old and his server for everything their mums credit card is worth. Of course its legal to upload videos.
Of course its legal to upload videos.
Actually, a lot of times it isn't. Displaying of copyrighted material for the form or purpose of profit is sometimes illegal. However, Garry doesn't mind this and has not enacted a EULA prohibiting this. As such, Gmod videos are fine.

Would you youtube agree?
Are you serious about what you're saying here or are you just looking for a legal debate?
you know what; never mind. I'm done with this topic. I thank you all for discussing your opinions.
