What kind of role-play appeals to people? (Not talking about DarkRP.)

Hey, I apologize if this is the wrong section for this kind of matter, but I was unsure where to post this.
I'm not here to advertise or anything like that, I'm just here to have a little poll about what people think.
Personally, I have role-played in Garry's Mod for six years and even how I saw it go down worse and worse over time, I'd like to give it a shot to build a role-playing server with some sense put into it.
I am getting a lot of ideas, but I have realized that ideas that are not familiar to others and are not from some popular game are usually ignored, so it's harder to base RP on it.
I have listed three options in the poll, those are just the main ideas I got around from people.

STALKER and zombie rp have been done to death, not to mention that franchise based servers have been dominating the RP scene for years more generally. I think it's for the best to work on original lore, unless you want to go into a universe that hasn't really been tackled in G-RP so far.

i was thinking about maze runner rp while watching it, but i have no idea how it would work, something original for gmod tho

This is the exact same logic behind all the awful franchise based RP servers. This train of thought aims to capitalise on a big name without consideration of how the franchise would actually lend itself to RP.

Then again, I feel fairly pessimistic about any good RP coming out of GMod due to a general preoccupation with custom models, flashy scripts and NPCs.

that's how most popular rps come about, hl2/stalker/metro, the franchise doesn't make it bad, shitty people making it and running the servers make it bad, you can turn "two people in a room roleplay" into an enjoyable roleplay experience if everyone was good at roleplay

maze runner is pretty much just post apocalyptic roleplay in a new setting, it would work perfetly fine, i just didnt consider ~how~ it would work cos i dont care to make it

For me the theme doesn't matter as long as it's realistic enough and doesn't restrict players too much like HL2RP.
Playerbase is the most important factor, FP RP servers have been great because of the players.

I don't want to play on a server where I have to apply on the forums for shit and I can't use the Q menu or have a physgun. Absolutely no monetizing whatsoever (ole fashioned donations and ads work fine).
