No idea how much garry monitors the forums, but if he's reading this then the question must be pretty obvious: Will Gmod get an official port to the soon-to-be Source 2 engine? IIRC Dota 2 is getting the first full port (sometime early this year) and once Source 2 become more mainstream, it'd be great to see gmod get not only a visual facelift but potentially improved physics as well (for builders).
Very Unlikely. Garry has stated that he's tired of Lua and has paid little to no attention to GMod recently.
EDIT: It would also be a lot of work as GMod uses (correct me if I am wrong) a 'custom' version of source engine that is old.
Garry has hinted at replacing the physics engine when this is finished.
hoping for a new version of gmod once the new engine is out. rather than port
if garry ain't gonna make a gmod for source 2 someone else will or valve because dosh alot of dosh
Someone could start a Source2 version of gmod and have it open source then have the community work on it.

Well obviously JBmod will support Source 2.
It would be a great benefit for modders with the new map editor.
[del]As mighty fuckin' dandy as GMod being ported to Source 2 would be with things like 1:1 physics meshes, far bigger map limits, file formats that suck a lot less and all that guff that basically makes it infinitely superior, I highly doubt Kilburn would take up a project so massive at a relatively low payout, and Garry having given up on the game to move onto other things basically seals this fate.
We feel you though, we WANT it, and I'm fairly certain I speak for everyone when I say that pretty much every recently active player wants it.
but the thing is that there's nobody left that can DO it.
Unless lightning crashes down upon the horizon and Garry emerges from the ashes, valiant and victorious, it's most likely not going to happen.
Only time will tell.[/del]
Holy fuck, after trying the Source 2 toolset, I think I can safely say I wouldn't like Garry's Mod to be ported to Source 2 under any circumstances.
I vaguely remember Garry saying something about this years ago, about how Garry's Mod was a mod for Half-Life and so he'll only update it to whatever engine the latest version of Half-Life is using. At first it was using the original Source engine since that's what Half-Life 2 was using, but then Episode 2 came out with the Orange Box engine so Garry's Mod was updated to that, but he hasn't upgraded it again to something on the level of Portal 2 or CSGO since Half-Life hasn't gone any farther (and also engine branches have gotten more specialized since then, so you can't 'just upgrade it' to one of those any more).
Sure, that was before Source 2 was actually released, but I don't think he'll change his mind. Last time I checked, anyway, the branch of Source 2 being tested out in Dota right now is highly specialized for top-down MOBA-style games, so you couldn't just move Garry's Mod into it without having to make a ton of changes.
Maybe we should ask again once Half-Life 3 comes out. :v:
Sgt Lulz, the toolset is still very early in development still. And like lurker said it is made for Dota 2 currently not HL3
