• How do I attract more people to my server?
    33 replies, posted
I have a server that has inventory, Gdrugs, Wire, and M9K. However it doesn't seem like people are coming on the server. Is there a way I can get people to join and are there any addons that would attract players?
Every other server has the same thing, come up with something new [editline]7th April 2016[/editline] which is going to be hard as fuck because literally every server has done everything you can come up with

You typically want these rules to be fairly condensed, with nothing redundant or unnecessary. You could condense propkilling, prop-pushing, etc into 'Prop minging' with clarification on the bottom of the list. This would prevent people from saying things like 'WELL IT JUST SAID PROP-MINGING, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS SERVER DEFINES AS PROP MINGING', while also keeping things compact. Be sensible, and be smart with the rules. Also, don't make donators supersoldiers because they paid five dollars, give them benefits, but not OP benefits.
don't host darkrp
From my personal experience these are some key things you should have: 1. Put "Looking for admins in the title" 2. Offer cash/rank prizes if people invite their friends 3. Like the person said above, have something original and innovative. For example: Unique guns if people are anything like me I love awesome custom guns and other things like-- jet packs? Just add cool shit! 4. Make admin ranks buy able. It may sound weird but kids love having power. The more power they can have, the more they play, the more kids, the more players. This is because obviously I'd rather join a server with 20 people rather than 0 people. 5. Don't be a uptight, abusive, douchebag owner. This mean don't act like a god because you own if I'm on the server and the owner is being abusive I instantly leave. 6. Have a appealing forum with custom titles, a nice layout, etc. Beleive it or not people would rather browse your forum than play your server sometimes. I hope this helped. I'm sorry if I made any grammatical or spelling mistakes. I don't give a shit if I did. Remember to be original and a fun owner!

Selling admin is abusive because you'll either have bad admins, or will have basically tricked kids to throw their parents' money away because they got their privileges taken away quickly. 2 is essentially a nice coat of paint thrown on top of spam, if people are having fun in darkrp, a gamemode where grouping up with others is HIGHLY beneficial, they'll invite people on their own. Also I don't mean to say all admins that pay are bad, but you'll likely wind up with one of those two results if you do sell admin, at least if you don't have a vetting process, but in that case they're paying you to work for you.

Most people wont join a server unless there are people on it. Get some friends and play on the server for a bit. It's a bit hard to start but eventually, assuming the server is actually fun, you'll start to get regulars. Selling admin is a pretty terrible idea in general. You'd have people who are horribly unfit for admin buying it, leading to all sorts of awful situations.

Also you can limit their abilities, etc. Inwas apart of a community where people paid around 500$ to administrate the forum for a guy. They basically paid for a responsibility because like I said kids love their power. For 2 I mostly meant give them 20k if they get a friend on, or you can make a steam group so that when you join it you get cash. And what's wrong with 3?
If we're going to be liquidating profits from the DarkRP server pool we're going to need these [QUOTE=MELT;50084472]From my personal experience these are some key things you should have: 1. [QUOTE=thecubanpimp;50096703]why reply with that bullshit? he asked how to attract more people, not how to make his server some generic garbage[/QUOTE] Sadly, nowadays that's the every most reliable way to get a lot of players easily.
DONT MAKE ADMIN RANKS BUYABLE U IDIOT ur gonna have dumbasses for admins
Why would you use M9K when you can get: TFA ( same skins only 10x better weapon base ) FAS ( Some attachments and decent guns ) CW 2.0 ( Very big pack but alot of stuff to do with it )
[QUOTE=Drewbie;50148247]CW 2.0 ( Very big pack but alot of stuff to do with it )[/QUOTE] My community runs CW 2.0, its really good but gurgles a players FPS like its nothin! So you gotta have a playerbase first really.
[QUOTE=Bings;50148280]My community runs CW 2.0, its really good but gurgles a players FPS like its nothin! So you gotta have a playerbase first really.[/QUOTE] In my experience people have better FPS with CW 2.0, FAS, TFA than M9K.
1. Keep away from rp_downtown 2. Play something else apart from DarkRP and see what you'd like in a roleplaying game (SantosRP is a good[sp](only)[/sp] example of an RP mode done in a sensible way) 3. Don't use chat commands to get jobs and interact with the surroundings- instead use NPCs to give work to the player. People don't want to fuck around in the chatbox and eventually you have all the code for a Metal Gear Solid game pop up because someone was just trying to drop 5 dollars. 4. Don't make everything overly high priced, this will discourage the player to invest time and effort. Cars for example should go from $900 up to $256,000 5. Make sure you have an easy to understand UI- People hate menus, but use something like Gphone for settings and such 6. Don't use any military models or firearms until you have a wonderful community ready. Only give the police officers a taser and handcuffs. Don't give players a way to shoot or do damage to anyone else. All this to avoid typical RDM. Also if you're doing this just for money, you should stop before it gets any worse.

Why keep away from downtown? He is asking how to attract players to his server if you look on garry's mod in the DarkRP section the most popular servers has "downtown_v4c_v2" I know it sucks, but that doesn't change the fact it's popular. 2. Play something else apart from DarkRP, DarkRP can be fun if you do somethign cool with it and fun, doesn't have to be "SantosRP serious roleplay" to attract people. Personaly I enjoy more servers that doesn't take themselves too seriously. 4. High priced things, doesn't always discourge people but if you find a server and you wanna stick to it, you wanna stand out therefor maybe work towards something cool like one expensive car? I don't say all cars should be expensive but normal cars should be fairly priced but there should also be an option for those who wants to invest time and effort into getting something not everybody has. All I'm saying there's not one formula for a cool server, there are plenty play with ideas and imagination but also use common sense and some experience.
Honestly? If you're looking to be just another DarkRP server then quit while you're ahead, there's hundreds out there to compete with and standing out in a pool thick with shit is next to impossible unless you're 100% certain you've got some kind of special gimmick to attract people with. Try something other than DarkRP or, hell, something different to RP entirely.
lol this may be far fetched but it would be cool if it was possible to do more things then the generic circle jerk of darkrp. like maybe add events and make it more dynamic, maybe even a story. for example you could add a headcrab infestations, or headcrab canister attacks. maybe combine vs rebels or some shit. here is some stuff i guess. -instead of a magic circle jerk in corner money printer economy, make it based on the completion of jobs (but not just permanent jobs since that would be boring). -maybe instead of money printers there could be item "printers" which print the item of your choice(only 1 at a time) . then you can get the data on the supply of an item, and get the data on demand (want) by counting the amount of purchases of the item. using this data maybe you can automatically set the price of an item (i aint an economist). this will lead to a better economy and better gameplay since people will be able to create jobs on their own simply by printing the relevant items. i also want to point out that because you cant spawn anything and everything at once it will force people to specialize and possibly do jobs in exchange for other things (your job in exchange for their job essentially). also since actually printing massive amounts of items would lag the server it would just store what you printed "on the cloud" (as a value). -you could also add realistic storage limits. For example say you wanted to store cars. the car has a size which occupy's a certain amount of space, which can be represented using numbers. so car = 3 m cubed storage limit = 9 m cubed so you can store 3 cars (virtually) -you could have printer upgrades as well, which im sure would be abused by 12 year olds who would make a circle-jerk friendly system to make money, rather than create a fair system. -everyone would have at least one, and it would maybe basically replace the ability to spawn whatever you want -it should be easy to steal from the printer, which would force people to make sure its in a secure place. [SUB]and also give the police a job[/SUB] -while it would only actively print one item at a time, changing the item would be instant and you would just have to wait till the next time it prints. -you could make the print time dependent on the size of the item too, which would make sense -if this system replaced the ability to spawn anything, it would be pretty hard for trolls to crash servers by spawning props. -the ability to plan what it prints would be nice. like print item #1 x3 then print item #2 x1. -i think this would make players interact more since they may need to interact more (way more) in order to achieve goals. no more circle jerk wanking in the corner money printing all day i guess. the problem though is that gmod ultimately is a great idea that cant actually achieve its promises. -you cant actually build stuff since building anything of interest would lag the game 2 much -gmod is supposedly really "physics based" yet lacks a lot of physics based mechanics (like destruction, air physics, fluid physics, light physics). -"blocks" in gmod are mostly indestructible so you cant build cool bases and go to war and shit. its like if all minecraft blocks acted like bedrock. imagine playing factions lol (minecraft factions). -this is why gamemodes (minigames) are a large part of what makes gmod's fun rather than sandbox, since you can still make cool gamemodes. gmod still loses though since its way easier to make a gamemode for minecraft then it is for gmod (i think so at least). also since given gmod's nature your more restricted in the kinds of gamemode's you can create in gmod when compared to minecraft. -maps are ridiculously small given the capabilities of today's computers, and unless you have like only 10 flat sides in the whole map its going to lag like shit. i have an i5 processor by the way and i think map creator's would agree with me. (little kid screams in background "you just dont have skillz") sure you could "optimize" it but how about you tell an architect to optimize his world rather than build. it really limits what maps can be like, and basically every map is a couple of large boxes (with exceptions). you need either a team or you need to really know how to get around gmods limitations. -it uses a game engine that wasnt even created during this century. i think its still works well for some other games, but its really just obsolete for a sandbox game like gmod. not much else to say about that. -npcs are absolutely retarded and battling them isnt interesting (or doing anything with them). -the idea of gmod is cool but the abilities of the program to reasonable achieve it isnt. i could add so much more dam this took a long time to type im back. heres some more thoughts. i think gmod would be fun if -you had building interiors -if instead of scripted things like elevators and doors, the player can have fun building them their self, using tools and putting together objects to create a final product (couldnt think of a less monotone way to put it, sry). [SUB]this isnt possible at the moment because...lag[/SUB] -if the AI doesnt require premade nodes and could figure out paths that it cant take on its own . like it can recognize when something is too steep to go up, but also recognize that it can go down some steep hills. -if sound was factored into the ai and it was able to triangulate sounds and make relevant calculations using that data. -if AI's "sight" was improved and it was able to see you though transparent things. -if AIs werent baby's that can be tricked using the move "peekaboo", and they have something called a memory. [SUB]maybe an addon could do this. i would prefer it to be a built in system though [/SUB] -im gonna go full on for this so, 10* larger and more complex maps...or at least the ability to fly outside the box, and have the skybox be a 3d image with no physics. i really just want to fly like a bird *hint*[SUP]planes[/SUP]*hint* . [SUB]seriously though way larger maps are long overdue[/SUB] -"health" for objects so that i can destroy stuff.[SUP] hello darkness my old friend :)[/SUP] --seriously a way to save complex creations made up of multiple parts is needed (on a server). an example of why it would be useful: you create a car. it can be used as a taxi. you use it as a taxi and make $. you leave the server or you want to create something else. if you leave the server its gone, if you want to create something else then you have to delete your car (because lag). if players could save contraptions then they could have some sense of continuity, and progress rather than having to restart every time from the beginning. so the person then can save the taxi and instead create a penis i guess, and load up and spawn the taxi when they need it. rules instead of the regular 500 point circle jerk list of dark rp rules: dont kill anyone without engaging in conversation first and giving them a chance to comply with your demands dont even bother with prop kill rules, just add something that prevents it. crazy ideas: -add an actual courtroom, and have a judge and jury job. let people watch i guess. or maybe make a system based on pitchforks and mobs. -make city scanners deployable by police, and assignable to specific players. maybe add a control center where the scanners feeds are displayed -make it so that people only know who is killed. add an evidence system where the cops have to figure it out. i think this would really compliment a pitchfork and torch system. players would obviously have to be able to disguise themselves in order for this to work. -add "drugs" that give people unwelcome abilities so that there is an actual demand for the regulation of them. now here's some ideas for events and jobs: -headcrab canister [exterminator] -thumper failure (antilion invasion lol) -build a car and race it [win the prize] -war. divide the map in 2 and just let them go at it yes i get it. it has no flow. comments and feedback is appreciated (or at least welcome). *edit* if there is a place where i can suggest stuff for gmod (or addons) then i

There's even an addon on the workshop that can give health to props.
[QUOTE=iwantfun;50178709]cool ideas i guess[/QUOTE] Nobody that plays DarkRP knows what a Combine or Rebel actually is. They don't know anything about Half-Life 2 and think it's some kind of robots vs army soldiers war. It's pretty sad.

People attract people. When a new player joins, you want them to stay. Each single regular player matters to your community so you want to keep them occupied with whatever it is that your server has to offer. If you're offering a sandbox server, interact with players when the playercount is low. Build with them together, show interest in their work (not too much), interact with them (race against eachother, fight against eachother, and so on.) If you're offering an RP server, feel free to break the meta-game rules. Go in observer and spot bored players who want to role-play with others. Break the meta-game rule and approach them in-character. Or in OOC situations, ask them what they think of the server. Take each suggestion, big or small, into consideration with the mindsetting of adding it so it will benefit the server, not you or your best administrator. It's not about you; you're maintaining the server and paying for it to keep it online. It's not just about the staff; they're there to keep people from ruining the fun. The you and the staff should have eachother's back and should be able to bend and twist whenever it comes to making sure that the visitors and regulars have a good time.
[QUOTE=Autonomous1;50256935]Or in OOC situations, ask them what they think of the server. How about learning lua and making your server truely unique?
