Well I have no idea how, but I've managed to make a releasable thing.
Ninjas! is a gamemode with four teams, but fugitives and civilians are boring so they don't really count.
-If you are a ninja, you have to run around killing marked targets, who glow red, while avoiding the police.
-If you are a metrocop, you have to kill ninjas and protect the innocent civilians.
[del]Civs are just a glorified spectator mode. I might get rid of them later. If you are really badly behaved as a cop
you will become a fugitive, and everyone will try to kill you.[/del]
Civs have now been removed, it's just ninjas and metrocops now.
The focus for the ninjas is creative use of space and momentum, using the climbing/parkour system I've
implemented. Here are some videos!
Bouncy, bouncy movement:

Climbing and vaulting:

Climbing and walljumping:

Jumping and rolling:

Super jump boots:

The ninjas are obviously pretty hard to kill, but on the flipside, they have no obligation to work as a team.
The metropolice, on the other hand, start out with radios they can use to communicate anywhere on the map and
can do stuff like build surveillance stations to view the city from patrolling combine scanners. This,
coupled with the bounty system (that I still have to fix a little) gives you the opportunity to divide and
conquer by sowing confusion and dissent among the ninjas. Parkour can also kill you fairly easily if you
misjudge a jump.

The center of the metropolice is the Police Chief. This position is given to a randomly selected
metropoliceman every ten minutes or so. Amongst other things this player gets:
-A higher salary (all cops get a base salary, with bonuses for hunting down ninjas and bonus bonuses for
killing especially infamous ones.)
-The ability to upgrade the health and number of AI metrocops on the map. I may try to add equipment upgrades
in the future, but that's proving to be a bit problematic at the moment.
-The ability to sort of control where the ai metrocops go. If you right click with a stunstick, they'll run
to where you point. Right click on an enemy, and they (should) prioritise that enemy.
However, being police chief is not without certain caveats. Every time a civilian, an ai policeman or a
teammate is killed your 'notoriety' will rise. This shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if your team is
disorganised and everyone keeps dying you could find yourself becoming a fugitive.
The gamemode has basebuilding and whatnot. You can buy a physgun and some props, then some turrets to defend
the place. To encourage teamwork, the friendlist allows you to give other players the ability to touch your
stuff. All props and vehicles should be fully destructible.

Vehicle explosions probably do need a bit of nerfing.
Currently, only gm_bigcity is supported since it provides a lot of roof space to run about on, and climbing
into weird places doesn't tend to break it, like a lot of the rp maps. If anyone has any suggestions for any
maps that might be suitable, let me know, because bigcity does get boring after a while.
My main concern at the moment is performance. Citizen AI seems to be pretty resource hungry and with 40 of
then on the map at once it can cause a very noticeable performance hit, and quite a bit of network lag.
Having an awesome beefy server might solve this, I don't know, as I've only been testing it over lan on my pc.
It's almost ready to be released, but I still need to fix a couple of things, and maybe add some more stuff
if I come over all feature-creepy. I know the menus are all godawful, but they work, right?
Ask away if you have any questions, or if there's anything it sounds like I haven't rambled about.
This gamemode looks interesting, but (no offense) the HUD and Menus look horrid. You should invest some time in making them look nice before you release this(if you do)
A few ideas I have are:
- Animations for the Parkour Skills
- An actual map specifically for this gamemode
I do however love the idea, but it just needs some work :)
Cheers, the menus do look pretty bad, and I will go back and make them look nicer.
Was there anything specific about the HUD, or is it the whole thing in general? I thought I got the colours to complement okay...
Personally Im a big fan of Dark Themes
Maybe something like FlatUI
I like the Garry's Mod Addon: Moderator it has a very nice menu. You might wanna make a HUD and Menu based off that addon if you want a link please tell me :)
Honestly my only major complaint is why the citizens and fugitives? I remember you saying something
about there being fugitives. As for menus I'd say work on them towards the end, because they do not
look that great as well.
Also why vehicles? For the metropolice maybe? What kinda maps are you planning on this running
on?

In case I wan't clear, the citizens were just the first team I added in-they are completely neutral and basically unimportant and I've removed them now.
As you play, killing policemen and citizens causes your notoriety to increase, as a ninja, this means that if you're killed you will lose more money, and the metrocop responsible will get a fat bonus.
If you are a policeman and your notoriety gets too high you'll be put on the fugitive team, who currently have no weapons besides those they can find, and no special climbing abilities like the ninjas. It's mainly intended to stop cops being complete mingebags and running around killing everyone.
The vehicles are available to both ninjas and metrocops at the moment. The ninjas have just a normal jeep, and the cops can buy either an airboat with a gun or a glitchy apc :v: I figured the cops needed vehicles, since they can't run so fast. There is also a vehicle repair station, which will repair your car if it is damaged.

In terms of maps, ideally they need to be something like bigcity, that is, big, open (ie you can run about on the rooftops) and preferably with some decent places to hide.
You could make this Mirror's Edge themed if you wanted to. Hmph.
You could make this Mirror's Edge themed if you wanted to. Hmph.
I could... I actually got that mirrors edge themed map recently and ran about on it a bit, but it isn't as open-ended as bigcity. I think I'll release it first, see what the general feedback is, and then start to work on custom maps if there seems to be a demand for it.
ChiefNinja could you possibly find a mapper, or make a custom map for it?
I'm sure I could figure out how to make a map- I have been playing around in hammer, but I'm not that great yet... I might try searching for a mapper, but it's not like I can really offer them any money or anything.
There's already a Mirrors Edge Map, try and use that, seems better than Big City.

Is there a IP for a server?
I haven't actually released it yet, just gotta fix a couple of bug that have been bothering me for a while. I don't actually own a server, but anyone who wants to is welcome to host it when it's out.
Do you mean gm_freecity_plaza?
Yes.
Ah, I tried that one, but it is smaller than bigcity, and the performance is worse.
The main thing though is that in my gamemode you can climb up walls. This means that on freecity, you can basically get places where you can see outside of the map, run into bits of invisible skybox etc. I'll have another look, but I don't think it would be suitable really... I guess I'll just have to make my own :v:
It's update time! I've managed to fix the biggest bugs, so the gamemode won't just be out soon, it'll be out really soon! I'm now going to start working on polishing/tearing out and replacing lots of the menus/ui stuff, but this will probably completed after it is released.
I also took some time to improve commanding ai metropolice for the police chief. Here's a video:

You can now right click to send your selected metrocops to a spot, or double right click to send all the cops on the map. Right clicking on a prop now makes the selected metrocops attack it. Shift left clicking an unselected unit selects all in the immediate vicinity, and shift clicking a selected unit deselects all units on the map. Right clicking at your feet makes selected units follow you, until given another order.

Making good progress, keep it up
Right, here we GO.

I'll add it to github when I've figured out how it works, and the workshop when the gamemode is a bit more polished. I don't own a server myself, if you want to host it, be my guest. If you're located in the EU, I might hop on and give it a try.
It's possible that it will be a bit laggy, but as I said, I don't own a server, so I don't really have the capacity to test this at the moment.
It's possible it will cause some conflicts with other addons, so far I've noticed minor errors when used in conjunction with npc_tools (which I believe may be outdated) and Wiremod. I have been unable to ascertain the full scale of these errors, but hopefully they won't be too bad.
Throw your bugs at me, and any balance concerns!
Thank you very much ninja for the release. It looks great.
That's quite alright! I don't think there are any servers up yet, but if you find bugs, don't hesitate to let me know!
Will the ninjas be able to regain health through shopping or health chargers?
edit: Nevermind; found the health machine. Also can people play as the targets?
I thought about adding that, but I figured it probably wouldn't be much fun, because you'd just be an unarmed civilian running away from a bunch of well armed ninjas...
Made a small test server, if you wish to try it out:
Server Name: Nexus Gaming | Ninja - Beta Hosting
IP: 206.255.118.8
This server will be moderated, so be nice and have fun Chief message me if you want owner on it :3
Ah nice! I'll check it out at some point. It is EU right?
Sadly no, I have no EU servers :(
Server is down for a while guys am updating some software!

Could you re-add the civilians I liked the gamemode more when they were enabled :)
I like the mechanics and the idea of the gamemode, but I find the UI very very ugly. It looks like you've tried to go FlatUI but given up halfway.
Already talked to him about that Roag :P
I've isolated the sources of the errors, so I'm just plugging the gaps now. I'll upload ver0.73 soon, and add a readme, since I've realised I've done a pretty piss-poor job of explaining some of the finer details of the gamemode.
I've been looking at the waywo VGUI thread in dev discussion, lots of really cool ideas there I can steal :v:
EDIT: oh, and civilians are still technically accessible. Just type 'team_1' in the console.
