It actually looks like he's shooting an explosion from the gun.
The explosion is behind him and the muzzleflash sort of merged accidentally with the explosion, but I think it's fine either way you look at it so go ahead. Either he's shooting normally with an explosion behind him, or he has some kind of super badass fucking revolver.
