For a little while i've noticed that 'The Big Three' Machinima makers have disappeared.
So thought i'd list them and their achievements and ask the Facepunch community of any recommendations for the next 'Big Three' and other top machinima makers.
First up 'Lit Fuse Films' http://litfusefilms.com/
In their time at being possibly the best 'machinimators' in the field they created creative, interesting and deep works of film. The most intriguing for me personally was 'Ignis Solus'

Succeeding that was their behemoth project 'War of the Servers' one of the largest scale machinima films made to date. Parodying the novel and musical 'War of the Servers' it showcased the feats capable with video games of today and a lot of effort.

Unfortunately, 'Lit Fuse Films' is on a hiatus at this time, due to the creators recent acquisition by 'BioWare' the company behind 'Mass Effect'.
Number 2. 'Smooth Few Films' (The Leet World) http://smoothfewfilms.com/
Though they didn't stick strictly to the medium of machinima, I still consider them amazing 'machinimators' and filmakers because of their role in web series 'The Leet World'. The series was set on a 'Big Brother -esque' game show where Counter-Terrorists and Terrorists competed to win a cash prize and show domination over the other. The first episode sets up the series beautifully

Also tragically after the first season of their live action web series 'Web Zeroes' life intervened and separated the group, leaving them to make their own paths in the world. Henceforth meaning that the site has been on a permanent hiatus since Apr. 2011.
Finally though not strictly machinima in the sense of the other two, I have to mention 'Cju01'
The users mind for traps and contraptions was astounding and inspired me many times to get back into building, 'Cju's' mind is utterly fiendish and occasionally pure genius. Sometimes it scares me how he/she can manipulate the simplest objects and turn them into vehicles for death and destruction.

Though 'Cju' is not 'dead' as you might describe the others, his videos are centred around 'Lets Plays'. I still have much respect for him/her and he's taught me how to improve my construction skills vastly! Check him out
So there we are, a list of my personal favourites. Feel free to share your favourites and also see if you can prove me wrong in thinking "Machinima is mostly dead" by showing me the up and coming 'machinimators'
Thankyou for listening to an old man's rant.
Good read
Most garry's mod machinima is random ragdoll spamming. It's a lot of work to do the simplest things. Thats why many people abandoned it.
Ross Scott is still making videos, just not as often. Eddie Smithson is also pretty good, but I don't think he's done anything recently. Unlike these guys, they don't use lame player models and player animations.
I used Robert Stoneman from litfuse for a paper in my film studies class. Fantastic director. You should have mentioned "Rusty Whispers" though. Great flicks.
Those guys drew from true inspiration rather than "How can I get the most views?"
Yeah man, Machinima's now a days are shit. The creators don't put any thought or effort into them... As TheGoodDoctorF said "Those guys drew from true inspiration rather than "How can I get the most views?"" and this is so true. It's all about "Well if Idiots of Gmod can get famous from flailing rag dolls, why can't I?" And in the end it all comes down the comedic value and effort. I doubt we will see anything good like those unless some people actually take Machinima seriously and put the time and effort into them.
Shame on you for not mentioning Max Of S2D :argh:
I have some ideas for machnimas and storyboards but I just don't have a editing program
Good thing SF still updates the Gamersushi blog.
Pixel eyes productions have made some of the best machinima out there using the source engine.

Also Cju01 video isn't machinima at all. Its just him construction traps on garry's mod.

brings back so many good memories when they first came out
Shame on you for not mentioning Max Of S2D :argh:
He isn't really popular enough to be considered big, though his production quality matches up with that of Lit Fuse and Smooth Few.

Need more people like him and less people doing stupid stop motion machinimas with 5 yearold comedy and damn tf2 voice overs.
Recently has been an all-time low in GMod machinima, in my opinion. Most of the 'talented and gifted' machinima makers have left, taking all of their talents and gifts with them. The general community now-a-days is just flailing ragdolls with crappy voiceovers, CS:S 'action' movies, and Tier 1 Youtube Poop (the shitty kind, where they just remix voices and use the rainbow effect) comedy style.
...I miss 2008. Why, father time, why.
Well, DasBoSchitt isn't too bad, but nothing nowadays compares to the old ones. The old, contraption-building, funny times of Gmod really seem to have passed by. Now it's all about who can pose the best generic military scene, and that makes me feel sad.
No Janus Syndicate?
By the way, Smooth Few folded after the second season of Web Zeroes.
