Source Recorder - Video tutorial about how to use the new AVI method.

This video tutorial will explain how to use the Source Recorder.
The Source Recorder is the in-game frame-by-frame capture tool. It's available in every Source game.
The advantage of the Source Recorder over Fraps is it's quality. The frame rate can be unbearable in intensive scenes (or even the most simple on outdated computers).
The sound quality with Fraps is worse if you don't have a proper sound card (cough), as it pulls it's sound from the Stereo Mixer instead of from the game itself.
And don't forget the watermark and the 30 second time-limit per scene.
(Don't bitch with "HAY BUT U KAN GET FULL VERSION IT NO HAS THOSE THINGS". Not everybody knows how BitTorrent works. Besides, quality's still worse.)

Instructions:
Make sure you grab this config file. Stick it in C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/USERNAME/Garrysmod/Garrysmod/cfg.
It'll automatically turn sv_cheats on and bind the [ and ] keys to enable or disable the HUD-hiding commands.

Set up your scene. Open up your console and enter:
record filename
When done, go back to the console and enter:
stop
Now, switch to 640 x 480 Windowed Mode and with all the other settings maxed out.
Open up your console and enter:
host_framerate 30
startmovie mymovie avi
Click OK if you have enough drive space, or if you're low on drive space, select MPEG from the dropdown menu, then click OK.
enter:
playdemo filename
At the moment the demo starts playing back, hit [ to hide the HUD.
When done, enter the commands:
endmovie
stopdemo
Done! Your video can be found in C:/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Username/Garrysmod
If during later gameplay the HUD disappears for some reason, hit ].

Other stuff
One:
Yes, I'm aware of the other tutorials. I made this one because
A. Hat's video is outdated (The quality difference between the TGA method and the AVI method is negligible, and the AVI method doesn't require VirtualDub, saving you a lot of time.)
B. The 30-minute video is just way too long.
Two:
Cameras and the Source Recorder work fine. Just make sure you type in record filename before you switch to the camera.

Thankyou.
I just kicked fraps up the ass and out the window. Since he is so laggy he missed and landed in the recycle bin. Oh well.
Helpful tutorial :keke:.
This is the last time I used Vegas for anything. It's rendering tool is so horrible. Just listen to the sound, for god's sake.
I tried switching to camera view in the demo but it didn't work, any ideas?
You can't switch to camera views in the demo, you have to do that beforehand.
Also you could use the "Drive" key in the demoui Dracia. To get that up, hit Shift+F2 or type in "demoui" in the console.
It's a good tutorial, although I hope you know I go over this method too in my thread. Written Version 2. If I could get camtasia or fraps to work for me, then I'd probably have made something like this too. But it's nice. 2 things.
Why did you advertise your website? It's a tutorial.
Also, nothing compares to a human voice explaining things. The text is fine, but sometimes it takes one person telling another in order to explain something.
Although any retards not able to follow this simple one probably shouldn't be making movies anyways.
Even though the answer is probably no, I'm going to ask if I can add this to my thread.
The Vdub method can be made to higher resolution, and you can have a lot more control over quality and encoding. But for 90% of people this one is fine. If you want the absolute best, go Vdub.
Cool.
I know this is a nooby question, but will this method work with the Tween Cameras?
If you have the camera stool out, then sometimes SR works with Tween cam. Sometimes.

you have to start the demo recording then press the button the camera. It won't work if you are viewing through the camera then start the recording, it'll just show from your view.
It's annoying me now, every time I go to render something in gm_construct it only shows and pink and black squares as the cubemap reflections on the walls. Also, when I open up the compression window after typing in startmovie *filename* it just freezes and I have to alt+tab out multiple times to fix it.
Any ideas?

I put work into it, didn't I?

That's what I thought at first. But there's nothing better than actually seeing what you have to do (that's why I zoom in on the console all the time) and just copy it. After I added all the text, a voice seemed unnecessary to me, so I left it out.

You can link to this thread if you want.

You have to run in windowed mode.

So running in windowed mode fixes both those things?
Yes. Alt-tabbing all the time makes your reflections and textures go all purple-ish. And windowed mode will allow you to use the dialog that pops up.

No more lag for me :D.
Also, one more question. I still can't switch to cameras in playdemo mode, any ideas?
Thanks for the tutorial.
I noticed that on another tutorial I used, it had a notepad print-out. I like yo keep these sorts of things as reference, but the one I have does not include everything you have. Could you make a printout with the steps in order. That would be great ( ;
Dracia, I answered that one for you, look up.
Pie, if this was more complicated, I'd say voice is necessary. But like I put below, you'd have to be retarded not to understand the simple way you lay out the steps.
Yeah, I wanted it to be simple as pie :excited:

I posted a written version, it's just under the download.

Song one.
How do i make cfg? :(
Edit: Never mind nice tutorial.
The only thing is the annoying [, and ] things. :(
Edit:
Oh, just watched it, very smooth and clean looking video!
I love you!
The only thing that annoys me is the jumpiness when you film demos online.
Uh, I want my normal .cfg back.
How can I do that?
Just remove it. Gmod will make a new one for you when you restart it.
Hey look a good thread. Let's put it back at the top. Instead of where all the other crap is down below.
Pie, how much do you pay for web hosting?
Well, I don't pay. A mate of mine has a server, he hosts for companies and organizations, makes a shitload of money with it.
So I asked him how much he had to pay each month and I was rather shocked when he showed me this:

I like the way you assumed that nobody buys Fraps.
I buy all my software legally, even Fraps.

I'm not just assuming it :v:
Pshh good tut but I can not get ANY sound what so ever any help with this? (And yes I had sound while I was recording)
Nice little tutorial, though I have a problem... I want to record at 1280x720, but both Windows Media Player and Sony Vegas can't open the video it produces. I even tried different codecs, and setting the resolution to 640x480. No difference, and most of the codecs just seem to crash gmod. :(
