Jeff, Secret Agent Whiskey, and Others - The Incomplete Archives of Clover
20 replies, posted
I've gotten a few people over the years asking if there was anywhere to read my old comics, and until now, there wasn't. Mythos contacted me recently and graciously offered to host my old comics on his website, metrocop.net. He's already got Apostacy, one of the earliest and greatest Gmod comics made, Worse Than Life from old buddy AJ Rimmer, and his own awesome series Hercule Cubbage. So, with proper motivation to get my old crap together, I got my old crap together.
Well, most of it.
There's a decent chunk of missing stuff sitting on a dead hard drive. Of course, it was mostly my newer and better polished material. Rave Man in it's entirety is gone (other than a preview), about 30-odd newest Jeff episodes, and random single comics. What I have, however, is Jeff starting from the beginning. Nearly the very beginning of Gmod, too. v6 is where I hopped in at, in early 2005. No faceposer, no fancy tools, and in my case, no proper editing software. Understandably, compared with what's out today, it's shit. But it's an interesting look at what things were like 8 years ago. Also understandably, I was 15/16/17 when I made these, so the humour is... cringeworthy at times, especially with the earlier Jeff episodes. Some comics make jokes about other old comics, people, and Gmod-specific things, so I doubt they've aged well. Apologies for the circlejerky amount of PHW Comics advertising that's on there, too. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy.

Here are a few of my more favourite comics I was able to find.

(Secret Agent Whiskey is about a bottle of whiskey... who is also a Secret Agent. Creative, I know.)

This is some really nice stuff, man. Thank you for putting this up.
This is what I was talking about earlier on the comics thread, guys. So bloody exciting!!
I'll upload 'em on Metrocop for easy access. Thanks, Clover!
An exciting blast from the past! Man, I'm feeling nostalgic. Thanks for the post, Clover.
Oh my god, this takes me back. PHW seems like a hundred years ago now.
For a while, I still had that Jeff "Mentos" commercial on my old hard drive, but it finally went kaput a while back.
yes.
thank you.

That's because it is, you are currently locked in a virtual reality simulator simulating life in the early 21st Century.
Oh hell yes. Thank you Clover!
Short puns, I love them!
Old Gold, excellent bit of nostalgia for us older folks.

Good seeing you around still, Lt_C!

Damn, that would've been good to have. I have the original one in the archive, but I remade it with actual motion and video rather than pictures.
Thank you for posting them again
Shiiiit I remember these from when PHW was still a thing.
Is it a thing again? Or is it still blown up?

It's still blown up, but I'm working on at least getting a sizable archive of older comics on Metrocop.net. The OP actually mentions that. Pay attention to the next few weeks, I'm planning on something in that regard.
Mind you, I don't consider Metrocop affiliated with PHW and I haven't made a forum or anything. At best it's carrying on the spirit and, soon, running on nostalgia fuel.
Nice to see something from the past. I've always loved your comics, man.
Oh wow, that took me back. I can't believe I recognise some of them. Thanky ou for putting these up, do you plan on getting back into the business?

Honestly, the nostalgia blast of this is making me ponder if I should. I've hardly touched Gmod since about v9, and I vaguely recall that posing was a lot different than back then. I still have the Jeff skin lying around in my archive somewhere, does anyone know how I'd go about getting that loaded up again?

It is pretty much identical to downloading models from Garrysmod.org. It is just that you need Extended Spawn Menu to use non-workshop models.
1.) Download the Extended Spawn Menu from Workshop.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=104603291&searchtext=legacy+addon
The reason is that unlike the past, downloading models for GMOD is as simple as clicking the subscribe button on workshop and GMOD will do the rest. However, for models that are non-workshop, you need this addon.
2.) Create an addon folder. Essentially, it is just a normal folder with whatever name you want. (ex: Jeffs_Skin)
3.) Put the materials and models file into the folder.
4.) Put said file into Garry's Mod's addons folder.
5.) It will appear in GMOD under the legacy addon sub folder. Find your model and pose away.
As for if you should make a comic making comeback... Whatever floats your boat.
Or, you know, paste the "models" and "materials" folders into the "garrysmod" folder and use the Browse tool in-game. I can hex the model so you can find it straight in "Garry's Mod", if you want.
If you need any help or pointers with the new interfaces, let me know, Clover! It would be fantastic to have you back in business, although there might be a period of adaptation to GMod 13.

You know, if Clover got back in biz, you can bet a lot of people would regain interest into reading these, so maybe even your comics could get some extra attention if you improved them.

Really? That is so disorganized. My method keep individual models and model packs separated and organized in their individual folders. That way, if Clover need to delete or update models, he can easily find and delete the folder.
My method simply take advantage of GMOD 13's new functions. If you or anybody feel like just dumping all your models into the model files like pre-GMOD 13, then go right ahead. I have 6 gigs of Legacy Addons alone, I can't afford disorganization.

It is hard to know what to improve when I have only gotten a total of 10 responses (excluding my responses) to three issues of comics whereas comics like this...
http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1390998
got more responses.
However, I have begun using dynamic lighting, the post-processing functions, and r_flashlightdepthres and r_projectedtexture_filter settings, plus make a cover for Issue 04. If this is the improvement you and other people want, then let's hope my effort is worth it.
It's not all about you, Person234. Nor are your methods to do anything, like organizing models, the only existing ones. Now let's try to get back on-topic.
To everyone: I meant to have Clover's comics all uploaded by tomorrow, but unfortunately real life stuff got in the way and I had to delay it. It's not a big deal seeing as everything's freely available already to read, but I do intend to have it be the start of a bigger archive, so by the time I get it up, I'll have more stuff ready to go.
