In the plot the dropships can fly in space mostly for a short amount of time. It just keeps me up at night thinking of it.

The dropships can go in space. The Halo 1 version didn't look like it could but the others added the hatch in the back so it can seal itself. It's pretty muched used in the same way as Blackhawks and C-130s in the books.
