I love how expressionless their faces are - really contrasts from the morbid, depressing theme.

It's not that, his expression is practically blank. Now iuno about you but most people would have an expression of terror, grief, and anguish if they were in such a situation and event.
If you were trying to make it seem like he's having an acute stress reaction (shock), then he should be acting delusional and confused. E.G. believing his wife is simply sleeping or faking it.
