Hello all. as many of you know, and probably even more don't care, I'm a member of Team Ulysses, makers of the ULX admin mod, and ULib, the library it's based on.
I often see discussion in the releases section and lua scripting area where an individual mentions they use more than one admin mod, often times ULX + ASS or ULX + .... any other made.
It always makes me curious as to why?
Please give constructive reasons as to Why you use <other admin mod> in combination with ULX?
Please be constructive in your answers.
Please don't start a "is better than because" discussion here, no matter what admin mods you use.
Give reasons you keep the other admin mod(s) that ULX doesn't do for you.
The reasons given could be used to improve future releases.
Who knows, you may even find out there's already a module for ULib or ULX that does what feature you're using in the other mod.
Listed reasons so far - with my additional comment (planned changes/modules or just general

GUI (ugly, slow to maneuver) - See current WIP, future integration plan of XGUI

No Individual tool restriction by group - See URestrict (Currently requires latest ULib beta SVN, won't work with our current release from downloads page)
ULX is ugly and slow in my opinion.
I know you can use chat commands for speed, but if you want to use a GUI, ULX is not the best.
Thanks Mythic. GUI's a common one, and has been for some time.
We've always focused on it's console commands, which if you're in game, will autocomplete for you, often quicker than most who can use menus.
Hit console key - type in "ul", hit down arrow to select ulx, hit space and a letter of the next command (for instance, b), Gmod/ULX will show commands starting with b, hit down arrow to choose ban, hit space, use down arrow to select player you wish to ban. Hit enter. Poof. They're gone, and you did't have to type but a few characters.
Autocomplete won't work from a dedicated console. That's a shame.
Though chat is handy, I prefer the speed of autocomplete.
For those who complain of bad GUI, we do have plans and Megiddo has had fun in past.

I admit, I do like ULX for its autocomplete feature. It is really handy. I also think it is a pretty stable admin mod.
I must say that XGUI looks very promising.
If I recall correctly, ULX doesn't have a menu for restricting individual tools. That is why many people use ULX in conjunction with Assmod.
Jamie, by itself, no it doesn't.
However, one of out team members has written URestrict for it which adds extra functionality for controlling tools, weapons and other items ULX doesn't have by default.
(Currently, his latest recode is only compatible with latest SVN ULib and ULX)
See my updated original post for it's URL.
Righto. Thanks for the hint. It would be nice if you included it with the original ULX, rather than a plug-in though.
Ulysses team motto is "Striving for Simplicity"
ULX is written with the simple intent, control ban/kick/punishment of players. Administration mod.
Not "control spam, prop protect, tool control, everything else under the sun" mod.
We understand the need in many situations for other items under the sun, and that's why ULX (and ULib) have "modules" folders. Many of our forum community and Ulysses team members have written modules that help for other items.
In part, that is why I started this topic.. I wish to see why others use ULX in combination with something else to see if there really is a big feature ULX is missing that isn't available as a module.

You don't have to include them in the main SVN, but if it's something most people would expect your admin mod to have and would cause them to reject it if it wasn't included, maybe you should have a second SVN that comes with commonly used/requested plugins. I for one would love that ( I already use ULX tough. ) One of the only things that I find annoying with it right now is the need to open the console to type certain commands properly. I find it faster to type it's name (or nickname) in the chat. An example of this is the ulx ent command which last time I checked wasn't included in the chat. Also I hear it is possible to have chat commands auto-completition, maybe you could look into that.
We only use SVN for beta code and team development... not "release code" like many other large projects seem to do.
Many of the releases made for ULib and/or ULX were written by people that aren't part of Team Ulysses directly. We'd have to share a public write-accessable SVN if we were to do your idea...which...just doesn't sound that logical to me.
Our releases forum section does just that, offers releases meant to go along with ULib and/or ULX, for anyone including us.
The autocomplete chat text is an interesting idea. I see a Lua command that would monitor what is being typed...not sure a command exists to show a 'dropdown' like in console. Perhaps one could be written.

The dropdown is just a matter of creating an HUD. And to be honest I think you should consider most players are lazy. They'd rather have just one SVN to download and be done with it, so they'll take the one that has the most features. I also usually never trust downloads when there is an official SVN because they could be re-uploads and I know I won't be up to the latest version. For instance I don't know if it's been released yet but I'm loving the text coloration you have in the SVN. It simply sucks to have to re-download and reinstall everything once in a while too.
