• Using the root user for SRCDS.

Just out of interest, it is strongly advertised NOT to use the root user to run SRCDS servers and you get warned about it multiple times in the command line but is there a actual big security risk or is it just what privileges root has and how easy it is to fuck everything up? I mean, I don't really see what other security threats there are?
People don't always report their exploit findings, so if someone somehow has a source engine exploit that can r-w-x the games files, chances are they could have access to your whole server. So you're not going to have a good day (i.e. virus', backdoors etc) That's what I think anyway as I don't only just host game servers on my VPS. You should never run anything as root, create a new user in the sudoers list if you HAVE to.
