There are some great sandworms in movie history, like worms from "Dune", or graboids from "Tremors". What about sandowrm npc - no animations, just lua. Easy thing - lua operated head, hiding under ground, and jumping off on other npcs. Unlucky, we dont have big worm ragdoll, but we can use instead a snake ragdoll http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=15000 If it will come out as a great piece of LUA, maybe someone will make a good worm model. But now it's just an idea. I think npc like that is so easy, that it can be even made in e2! But for now, it have to be scripted npc. Again, sorry for my English - I'm from Poland.
Using a snake as a placeholder does sound like a good idea till a model is made. Also, your spelling isn't that bad. At least you know to capitalize every I.

Unfortunatly, this may be out of range of simple npc coding. Maybe an SNPC, but I still have my doubts. Mainly because you couldn't program stuff that hides under the map, becuase then it is no longer on the map. Then it means by the source engines coding that it will not move or work at all.

You don't actually have to make the npc move through the ground, You can just trick the player into believing it.
