• What makes a good DarkRP?

I've looked around garrysmod.org and downloaded some DarkRP stuff but none of it actually works.. I've looked over facepunch for some stuff for DarkRP but none of it works. I was just wondering, what would make a good server? Are there any addons that actually work out there? I'm going to set up an 18 slot DarkRP server, I will then increase the slots as the server population grows. If you are a lua coder and want to help me with this, please contact me via Forum PM or just simply post a reply. Also, don't flame this thread please. Thanks.
If you want a good server throw DarkRP away. [sp](I am serious)[/sp]
If you want a good server throw DarkRP away. [sp](I am serious)[/sp]
If you dont have anything good to say then dont bother to post. If you want good darkRP server, i suggest installing the latest SVN version of darkRP. Also install the phoenix(PHX)prop pack and Wiremod which gives you tools with unending posibilities. Remember to restrict tools that can be abused in darkRP. Thats the main files you should have installed. But you can also add extra stuff, but make sure you get the newest version of them and not some strange version uploaded by random people. Adding new custon things to DarkRP is fairly easy, but require a little bit understanding of lua. Also the important thing is that your server should be unique. Never copy stuff from other peoples servers. Ask the community what they would like to see on the server. (Remember to not give em to much things that makes the gameplay to easy.) The community in that server is a big part aswell. You need good and fair rules. As for those you give Admin, they need to be trusted 100% and not use their abilities to gain advantages over regular players. They need to old enough to take adult/ wise decissions

RP is meant to be somewhere you don't HAVE to use tools. It must try to mimic real life in all ways necessary. What you are describing there is Build RP servers.
My feelings regarding DarkRP is that its a good gamemode BASE, so editing the derma menus, the jobs, the layout, all that, makes it ok, a good example of this is Mavbear's server. The problem is that people get cherry DarkRP and load models onto it and try to peddle it as a unique gamemode. Its like loading Kuro's skeleton gamemode and trying to play it. Its stale, underdone, and unoriginal. If you put some work into coding it and take advantage of the framework DarkRP provides, you can have an amazing server, but adding some jobs and SWEP's wont get your further than a blacklist on my server list.

Heck, You don't even need regular tools. The only good DarkRP servers I have seen is Rofflewafflez server that is actually serious. I consider a good DarkRP with a limit of 7-10 props, No toolgun, No PHX/WIRE, and a Very high price on guns. Heck I would even like a server with no gun dealer (But what would be the chance of that happening? Probably none.)

Ive played alottttt of rp servers and can tell that most people are in rp for: Theft, deathmatch, fun minging (darkrp i mean)

Good admins and serious players makes a good RP server, not custom HUDs/Jobs/Whatever.

Yes, as Kopimi said I run my own server based on DarkRP, with some major edits to the code, some of which have even ended up in the SVN itself. This has helped with bringing players in, but I was fortunate enough to have a strong userbase from the beginning. If you're just starting out, advertising your server won't do a hell of a lot. Get some Steam friends together, keep them coming to the server and listen to their input. Custom features are definitely a plus (because DarkRP servers really tend to be the same) but it is the community that counts. You can have a lot of fun with the right people, even if all anyone is doing is raiding each other. The good thing about DarkRP, unlike other RP gamemodes, is it doesn't take itself too seriously, and it allows for major editing with very basic LUA understanding. Take advantage of it, build a strong community, and go from there.
I suggest having a policy against little kids screaming in the mic, I had a policy as such for my old server and the rest of the player base that wasn't made up of the kids being muted and the kids' friends were quite happy with this policy. The thing that ruins DarkRP is immature players but also immature admins so when you 'hire' new admins make sure they are at least above 15 that way you can possibly root out some of the adminges. [editline]05:53PM[/editline] I also suggest having a rule that all admins must have mics, it helps with communication alot and some people (Like myself) feel that its easier to talk to an admin if he is already actively talking over a mic...and also theres no way you can know for sure the age of your admins without them having a mic.
