Gamemodes can be downloaded here: www.gmodgcc.org/#gamemodes If any of you entrants plan to update your gamemodes, just give me a new link to a release thread or svn where people can find a more recent version of your gamemode. Here are the reviews:
Donkie's Melonracer Donkie's entry - melonracer with a HUD and the ability to change maps, with the powerups added in. The booster was obviously best powerup. :V Seemed slow, but it's always fun to beat people. Honestly, this gamemode was the most fun melonracer fix I could have imagined. It worked, it changed maps, it had a functional HUD, everything that needed to be there was there for it to function, it didn't just sit there broken. Drakehawke's - some potential here, but it lagged...a lot. Unplayable a lot, sometimes. Not sure if it was server or gamemode, but it's hard to have fun when you can barely move. It was also hard to figure how who to shoot, looks like it was because of a clientside HUD error, but that may have been just me. Good fun to shoot people, though. And, even disregarding the lag, it was kind of hard to play and shoot things. It was kind of frustrating at times, but it worked and got some good stuff going on. After we got a fix for the unplayable lag part, it was still playable, but I didn't find it very fun. The goal wasn't very easy to see how to achieve, and doing it was very hard. frag's - Let me state something first - I'm biased, because he used the gamemode fragment I uploaded. I'm biased against it because all he did was rebrand it and break it. :V I mean, yeah, he added a broken dialog and a speedometer. And broke lots of other stuff. And didn't add any nice features, like a race actually starting or anything. :( (He didn't even bother to put his own name into the info.txt, which astounded me) Being a little more objective, it was the supplied melonracer with a semi-functional HUD and a buggy/laggy camera (that I made). It was kind of annoying to move with it, although I had more experience than most with it. We honestly spent the least time playing this version of melonracer, as there was the least to do in it. I mean, he added some unfinished menus, and in the code they had the word CONCEPT next to them, but they didn't help make the game any fun, since they didn't seem to do anything in the slightest. Nick's - Okay, so once we got it working it was pretty good. Ragdolls spazzing around the racetrack was pretty hilarious, the lap timers and HUD were accurate, and the powerups had sound effects and worked and other such nonsense. Pretty excellent, really. Of all the submissions it seemed the most polished and playable, the one thing that could have potentially made it better would be less lag, or if clientside ragdolls existed. :D Hentie's - It worked, this a good thing. It had style, that's a good thing. It wasn't terribly fun, though. We spent a lot of time going "lemme shoot you to see what it does" and not a lot of "Imma win ahaha" like we did with Donkie's, or even laughing hilariously at flailing bodies like we did Nick's. It was very well presented, though, nice looking fancy effects everywhere. Water makes completing a lap very difficult, though. Add in a little bit of lag and it's close to impossible to even come close to completing a lap. Rankings: 1st: Nick's 2nd: Donkie's 3rd: Hentie's 4th: Drakehawke's 5th: Frag's

Donkie's Melonracer As the first gamemode we tested, I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't really surprised - the rules are that the gamemode is a melonracer mod. This was a minimally modded melonracer to be similar to Mario Kart - that is, powerups like boost or banana, as well as your standard HUD. It was pretty fun, but so is melonracer when you play with other people. The first time we played this, there were a couple lua errors, but nothing too bad. When a player completes the race, they become a spectator - a particularly harsh bug is that you could suicide while spectating, which put you as walking around, where you can grief melons. Of course you don't collide with the melons, but you can place barrels in front of them with the use key, etc. That part actually turned out pretty fun. We also found that players randomly exploded, which left one of the races impossible to beat. Other than that, it was just melonracer. 6/10 Drakehawke's Gamemode: When you spawn on this one, you are frozen in the air and see a fullbright desert. You then start buttonmashing and trying to become unstuck, then you fall and explode and are extremely frustrated and confused, lua errors everywhere. Eventually, I found that pressing S unfreezes you and you can move forward/strafe with WAD. It was very, very confusing what we were trying to accomplish - all I saw was that I had 1/5 bananas apparently. Oranges work kind of like little missiles, which were really fun to use, despite the lack of crosshair. The goal was apparently something to do with getting bananas from somewhere and putting them in a container or something. There's a thirdperson mode where you can see your meloncopter which has some nice effects. Aside from that, there are a plethora of bugs. The view is not predicted which means it has lags between when you move your mouse and when your view changes. Along this line, if your meloncopter is at an extreme angle (straight up, straight along the track) it spazzes out. If you're on the 'sexy team' and die, you make a parabolic arc of bananas and melon gibs and sawblades and shit like that which lags out the server and crashes it. Even after we finally got bananas, we couldn't put them in the bins. The lag and crashes made this gamemode completely unplayable. Finally - it's not even in the vein of a racing gamemode. We played this again on a modified version where Drakehawke removed the teams, so there were no longer spams of bananas. There were still lua errors on the side, and the carts now accepted bananas. Apparently, the goal is to move the carts forward by putting bananas in them. The map's so big, though, that it would take forever for 10 players to win. However, it's still just dogfight with melons, less effects, and lua errors. 4/10 Frag's Gamemode: This was the most nauseating gamemode we played. The camera is horrendous. I can't stress this enough. The camera is HORRENDOUS. It lags behind you extremely far, and often clips through walls at strange angles - I guess it adds difficulty, but come on, it's utterly terrible. The GUI elements are misaligned and overlapping, and the 'arrow' (a grenade at the top center of your screen) points to nothing. When you first join, the HL2 credits song plays, very loudly, over the music I was listening to. There was a garage feature by pressing F4, but was nothing but a derma window that had no effect. Whenever anyone passed a checkpoint, it said GreaseMonkey had passed it. Finally, we were all soccer balls. Halfway through testing, Levybreak revealed that this is actually his gamemode, but with the gamemode name displayed at the bottom left and a text-only speedometer (and more bugs), which considerably lowers the score as not much was done. 3/10 Nick's Gamemode: We get the gamemode running, and get on. There's a "gamemode will start soon" text at the top of the screen, and we're all CS:S counterterrorists. All we can do is run, and strafing left or right is disabled. That's the gamemode. Well that's a lie. He submitted a fix at the last minute, which got it working. Apparently you're a ragdoll, in the vein of RagMod, where you flail all over the place. It's a standard racing gamemode, with speed (in units of SPM whatever that is), checkpoints and lap times. Powerups are really pretty, but the notification text often doesn't fit on the screen, because it's so huge. When I played, the ragdoll lagged behind quite a bit, and lagged the server as well. I couldn't run at all, so I was stuck in a very slow walk around the track. It got so unbelievably laggy, it was unplayable for me. The ragdolls are funny though. 4/10 Hentie's Gamemode: So we join and there's a slick
I did say to you in my email where I had obtained the HUD from Grea$eMonkey, maybe you missed it? I never wanted to win, just wanted to take part and say I tried to get involved with something on FP, Uni work is 1st priority so this was something I picked up for an hour or two in the final week. Also noticed that my GM only works in Single Player by the way, not sure why, ah well this was my first time working with a GM, not sure if I will be doing it again.
Woo! The fact that a bug (with spectating players able to pickup stuff) turned into a funny feature was kinda cool, maybe I should make something out of that. It was fun playing the other gamemodes, Nick's was hilarious!

[editline]17th January 2012[/editline] I know I'm kind of jumping the gun here, but when is the next contest?
You mean like how spectators in TTT can push props?
Well, maybe winners would be able to try and delay those who already race, would give it a nice twist.
I know I'm kind of jumping the gun here, but when is the next contest?
Probably early spring when I have time off to organize a new one, so not for a few months. I already have some ideas for the next contest.
From the sounds of the reviews, it looks like the entries were all lackluster and ridden with errors. Maybe next contest have it last longer? (User was banned for this post ("Ass" - Grea$eMonkey))
From the sounds of the reviews, it looks like the entries were all lackluster and ridden with errors. Maybe next contest have it last longer?
The point wasn't to have fully polished gamemodes. Now that the gamemodes had a big test and review the developers should continue working on them. I'd really love to see some of these finished and put on a dedicated server.
I had no idea this was happening. You should let me know so I can post news on garrysmod.com.
