constraint.Rope crashing game when attached to player

using constraint.Rope to attach a player to a prop_physics of MOVETYPE_NONE (just using regular old models like the manhack model, weapon worldmodels etc.). Happens both in singleplayer/listen and on multiplayer dedicated servers, but for dedicated servers the clients don't crash, despite the code being shared. Rigid is false. Bones are both 0. I can't figure out what is actually causing it nor how to fix it, since it seems to happen completely randomly, sometimes it can happen after it is only done a few times, sometimes it won't crash at all.
