Using an image as a derma background

I had an idea that stemmed from a leveling plugin I saw for DarkRP that used an actual image as the material of a derma panel.

My question is, if I make an image to be the background of a GUI I want to make for my reputation system. Would it be possible to put cracks in the image as transparent/alpha, then put a colored box behind the image depending on the level of reputation to color the cracks in the image different colors?

I have never personally tried making a GUI yet on gmod, but I knew the day would come eventually so I am just making sure this IS possible before I start trying to make it. Also what image size would be best in terms of filesize to use for a GUI that takes up maybe 1/2 of the players screen but centered (Probably a perfect square)?

NOTE: I am not looking for code just want confirmation that my idea is possible before wasting my time on it.
