• Do i have to pay so i can host my own dedicated server?
    21 replies, posted
Everywhere i ask, they say that i can´t have a dedicated server for free since i would have to pay for Anti-DDos and Addons and i´m not sure about it. Can someone help me? If anyone bans me, be sure to pray at night cuz i know some stuff about satanism.
You can host your own server by following this tutorial on the wiki https://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server
to run a good 24/7 server with good performance and security, yes, you indeed have to pay, running a server from your home computer is dangerous, useless, and has shitty performance, and most addons these day cost (ScriptFodder).

Exactly, having a server running from a computer at your home is only dangerous, useless and has a shitty performance if you dont know what you're doing. If you got some good net security, have got a good server box and have got a good internet its good to go, but that may cost you a lot of money. Its not always those things, it just is for the people that dont know what they are doing.
From experience, I suggest not buying a server until you know what you want within your server, and well...Until you know how to install addons(?) Check out JackkTutorials. Until then, you should definitely run a server off your net.

Plus since he actually asked, it doesnt look like he actually knows what he's doing.
serverwatch we know its you

The answer is yes, and you're scaring him away from doing so by saying its dangerous? It is suggested and it'd be helpful if he would host off his net simply because, why waste money on the first few weeks trying to figure out what it is you exactly want in your server?
If you mean a server with a playerbase & community ect. then yea you gotta atleast pay for the hosting. If its just to develop on or play with friends every now and then, you can just do it on your PC.

So big that you literally couldn't use the router anymore? I had, and I learned from it. I now only host servers wich I only use for developing, for the rest I pay a dedicated server and run my servers on a centos OS.

But if you really want to go further, you don't even have to portforward your IP, and stay hidden locally.

And Pissing off people? You even get DDoS'd by skids you ban for a few hours, or even if your server gets a bit 'active', lets say that. We already had a serverwatch-like owner joining our server who shittalked wich we banned for file stealing from multiple communities, who DDoS'd us. Also staying hidden locally? Not forwarding the port? Then its useless to have a server unless its just for developing, and we dont know for what OP wants the server, maybe for a community? Thats why he HAS to pay.

For example, instead of a router my net has a direct connection to a very powerful firewall. May the net stop working with a huge attack? It may. May it stop working suddenly from it as well? I dont know, but i assume so, but in that case i will just continue to do it, trying to fix it and trying to put more measures to it, instead of giving up as you did and going for... "The safe and easy way". And if you have a bad experience with it, it doesnt mean everyone else will.

Plus direct access also often costs alot more, especially if its to a very powerful firewall, and then again, we don't know IF the IPS allows/provides such a service. Also, some have to pay extra money for 'alot of traffic' on their connection, wich is another reason people shouldn't risk being DDoS'd.
i stated it in my first post, i never said it was cheap
And I just said that he doesn't want to pay/that it costs money. You keep saying its 'safe' _IF_ he has ALOT of MONEY for a home server box, wich is already expensive on its own (looked a few years back for myself), an additional firewall software for the server AND all home computers, optionally a firewall ROUTER/IF the IPS provides such services, direct connection to a bigger hardware firewall - expensive af, and a big connection -- ALSO EXPENSVIVE IN SOME COUNTRIES/STATES. Get what I mean now? tl;dr he doesn't wanna pay, aka no home server, no firewall etc etc etc. EDIT: Plus all the energy costs he has to pay each month, depending on the box, usage of CPU, and RAM etc.

You have even given me the reason now, that it can actually be a good home server but that you have to waste a lot of money
Ehm... Or even better. Do you ever see me talking about this guy not wanting to pay? I was just proving you wrong and you werent even... "Reading", you just understood from every post what you wanted to hear. Example:
You may have 'read' what op ASKED, but did you comprehend?
And I just said that he doesn't want to pay/that it costs money. Why do you keep pushing this argument and create new contexts of 'home boxes' and 'energy costs', like seriously, it doesn't take much to run a server off your internet.
Yeah idk wtf whitestar is talking about with boxes and "high end firewall software and routers", whatever those even are. I ran 40 slot servers off my desktop in middle school. Indeed I did get DDoS'd a few times, but there is no cost involved besides energy, which not only does OP probably not even pay for, but whoever does isn't even going to notice.
Seems he totally gave up he looked at this, rated Sannys late and didnt even post. He is not even looking at it now. We won! :v:
