• Collaboration Project to Teach New Developers

I had an idea where some experienced developers would come together to help some less experienced or new developers get knowledge in developing larger scale projects. It would ideally be a gamemode of some theme, and we'd try to explore most categories like stencils, VGUI, NPCs, binary modules ( depending on interest ) and etc. It should also try and encourage some more positive coding habits with a focus on modular design and readability. People should be able to jump in and quickly understand what is doing what, when, where, and how. The end goal would be to have it finished within 2 months or so and release it, with testing in between then on a server. This would end up taking place over the summer to minimize conflicts with people in school. Ideally the coding would work in segmented job rotation and people would be getting practice in each overlying category. We may have to arrange times where we would all meet to do a "lesson", or just discuss the status of the project. I'm not sure if this is an idea people would be interested in helping / participating in or how realistic my goals for it are. I know there's plenty of tutorial videos but I feel like interacting with someone on a more hands on project is a lot better. I'm looking for some input on the idea and where to make changes for it to work. Regardless of if people are willing to help I will probably pick up some people and do my best on a smaller scale [editline]edit?[/editline] Feel free to post some feedback. If you want to participate in some way I'm a PM away
This is a great learning opportunity. I hope others see this and hop on board. I know I would definitely like to be apart of this.
I suggest using github and teaching them git as well. My friends forced me to use git and I couldnt thank them more for teaching me :)
I'm sure we could all learn a thing or two, even the best of us.
If that happens, count me as in, I am a newbie in LUA.
If that happens, count me as in, I am a newbie in LUA.
me too I'm always happy to learn but these days no one is happy to teach me :(
Dont really count as a new developer, but if you guys want the input of ways to do things and why, I wouldn't mind regularly going through the code and commenting on things that could be done differently and better.

If people don't feel like they are experienced enough to be a general mentor you still shouldn't be afraid to post. All of our codes will cross at some point so we'll always be checking each other. It's collaboration project, some people know better ways to do things than others. Besides, if you are an expert in just one area you could always help users with just that area. I'm going to set up a steam group closer to when we begin so I can get a consensus on where the focus should be. So far the most popular category is VGUI. I will probably group people up and see where they are having difficulty in the particular categories so I know where not to waste time. Also if you're PMing me make sure to PM me your steam profile as well!
I'm semi experienced in VGUI, I'd be down to help and learn alike.
I don't mind joining, as there is always something new to learn no matter how much coding experience you have.
I would really like to learn !! The only thing i can do is modify. I have some bases in lua and c++ I have already modified weapons (sound, dmg), and other stuff My steam : http://steamcommunity.com/id/dosam01/ My work : http://steamcommunity.com/id/dosam01/myworkshopfiles/
I've created a community group for everyone interested. Be sure to follow the stuff here so I can start organizing times and such. There's a lot of interest and I'm not sure if I can handle everyone alone so I'm going to try and match people with the best availability and need together.
http://steamcommunity.com/search/groups/
How did you find that option? It's no longer visible on mine and my friends' steam client.
It wasn't on mine either - but at least you can use that to search if you're signed in on your browser [editline]13th May 2017[/editline] If you go in Big Picture mode and press the 'Web' option you can type that URL in... but that's a pretty bad design choice for the moment [editline]13th May 2017[/editline] Maybe they'll fix it later, but I'm sure they're busy making half life 3
Always happy to learn and help teach, count me in
