How to get other Source Games in to Source FilmMaker ( like Portal, Portal 2, L4D, Half Life 2, ETC)
21 replies, posted
This Tutorial i made in the Steam Guides Game Hub for the Source Filmmaker on Steam I am also posting here!
Original Guide: Which i made and imported it and tweaked it for here on the fourms:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=126371116
Now Here's how to do it!:
What you need to have installed
- Source Filmmaker: http://store.steampowered.com/app/1840
- GCFScape - http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=2
- Any Source Game ( Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Epsoide 1,Half-Life 2: Epsoide 2, Portal , Portal 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Counter Strike: Global Offensive,Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Day of Defeat Source, ETC)
Only for Portal 2 and Counter Strike Global Offensive - The model_process.bat saved somewhere where you'll remember it: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/897064/model_process.bat
Right click on the Desktop, and go down to 'New' and select 'New Folder'. Name this new folder the game you are working on the name of the game with No Comma, No spaces, no capitals (for example, if you are going to do Portal 2, name the folder portal2, or like if your working with Counter Strike Global Offensive, name the folder csgo, and press enter

Or

IMPORTANT!
NOW THIS IS GOING TO GO TWO DIFFERENT WAYS,
SO SKIP TO THE NEXT LIST IF THE GAME YOU ARE COPYING ISN'T ON THE LIST SKIP DOWN TO THE PART STARTING WITH COMMON FOLDER GAMES TO FIND THE GAME YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.
STEAMAPPS FOLDER GAMES:

SKIP DOWN TO 'COMMON FOLDER GAMES' BELOW IF YOU GAME ISNT ON THIS LIST
IF YOU ARE USING:
- Half-Life Source
- Half-Life Deathmatch Source
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Epsoide 1
- Half-Life 2: Epsoide 2
- Half-Life 2 Deathmatch ( If you are doing the last three, unless you don't have them, then why do this one? lol)
- Portal
- Counter-Strike Source
- Counter-Strike Source Beta ( Again, why would you need this if you have CSS? XDDD)
- Day of Defeat Source
- Team Fortress 2 ( Source Filmmaker downloads Team Fortress 2 stuff with it, but the TF2 that SFM comes with is a completely old version from what i read, import the current TF2 files if you want newer stuff, like MvM models.
- Left 4 Dead
- Left 4 Dead 2

Then,
Navigate to ( Unless you use a Diffrent Lettered Drive for you Windows OS) Then:
32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps
64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps
and look for the game you want, like for Portal 1, look for 'Portal Content' and double click on it to open it in GCFScape
COMMON FOLDER GAMES:
- Portal 2
- Counter Strike: Global Offensive
- Dota 2
THEN
Navigate to
32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

Using Portal 2 as an example, now open Portal 2\portal2 and scroll down to the pak01_dir.vpk and double click it to open it in GCFScape ( all other Source Games in the Common folder will have a pack01_dir.vpk in their (source Game Name\gamename)
Note: yes, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are in the Common folder but their game files are in the Steamapps folder.
Now we are in GCFScape, see the file on the right box?

Right Click and then left click 'Extract'

Remember the folder on the desktop we made for our game? ( in my case, portal2)

Well, in the window asking where to extract the selected folders to click the new folder you created on the desktop earlier and then click OK.
7. Now GCFScape will copy the games files to the new folder we created on the desktop, give it time to complete

When it is done extracting, close GCFScape and go to the desktop,
now remember the model_process.bat i had you download from Dropbox earlier and save to the desktop?

Well find that, and right click it, then left click copy
Then in the folder we extracted the game files to on our desktop, go into that folder

Right click somewhere and paste model_process.bat in there, then run it.

ONLY FOR PORTAL 2 AND COUNTER STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE, SKIP TO BELOW THE NEXT IMAGE IF YOU ARE DOING A DIFFERNT SOURCE GAME!!!
now let this process go till it is done. the model_process.bat
will close itself when it is all done.
Close the folder, now on the Desktop, Right Click the folder and left click 'Cut'

Now Navigate to
32-Bit - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sourcefilmmaker\game
64-Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sourcefilmmaker\game

and press CTRL+V to paste the folder in here.
Now while in the folder we are currently in, go into the usermod folder and locate gameinfo.txt and double click to open it.

Now in the gameinfo.txt in Notepad ( what i use) scroll down till you find a part that looks like this:
Game |gameinfo_path|.
Game tf_movies
Game tf
Game left4dead2_movies
Game hl2
Right under : Game hl2
Put the name of the folder we moved to the game folder of the sourceflimmaker EXACTLY like the games above it are placed ( so you type Game ( then press the TAB key here 4 times then type the game you moved's name so it lines up with the hl2 line and the ones above it)
For an example with Portal
you would put:
Game portal
or for Portal 2
Game portal2
Now go to File > Save then exit note pad
We're Done! You should be able to use the game you want to use in the Source Filmmaker.
Have fun!
Feel free to ask any question, I am learning how to make SFM videos, because I don't know how to just quite yet, but post any questions or if there's something you might not understand here, let me know and ill take a look!
Additional FAQs
Q: "My Left 4 Dead models are glowing! What the hell is happening?!"
A: Don't worry, Facepunch user hl2rulez has found a fix to this issue
1. Go to SourceFilmmaker\game\left4dead folder\materials\models\infected\common
2. Find the file called "common_infected_shared.vmt" and open it by Notepad++ (for example).
3. In this file find and remove the "$bumpmap "effects/flat_normal"" string.
4. Save it and check the result.

Whats the use of model_process.bat?
HALF UNRELATED THREAD HI-JACK QUESTION:
Is it fine to request game files? Let's per say that I don't own CS:GO, but I'd like to use the models purely for SFM. Does that count as piracy or whatnot? Provided that of course someone is willing to upload hundreds of megabytes of content.

Basically it copies the .vtx files and creates copies for .dx90.vtx versions and .dx80.vtx versions.

Sure! Always glad to help!
Can you add model_process to another file-host please?
Can you add model_process to another file-host please?
yea, i found out you only need to do the model_process.bat if you are only doing Porta; 2 or CSGO, i gotta update post 1 for it!
Oh shit, awesome, thanks man.
I want to import CSGO content but pak01_dir.vpk appears to be empty! I guess it's protected or something. Is there a workaround for this or am I missing something?

This happened to me. Either try re downloading GFCScape and re download CSGO.

You need the final version of GCFScape (v1.8.3)
Thank you. <3
It is good you got it working! Yea, aren't they still bring updates to GCFScape?
