"Unlocking" Bodygroups & Skins within Meet the Class projects in SFM.

After many hours of searching, I honestly can't find an answer for this anywhere I look or whatever search I type into Google (if you know a thread or site that does, feel free to point me there). In the Meet the Class projects included in SFM, the main character (or sometimes an important object like a Sentry or Minigun) has their skins & bodygroups inaccessable, even when I swap let's say the Engineer for a Spy or any other class character model, while every other model allows you to change their skins & bodygroups (ex. The BLU characters and most RED sentries in Meet the Engineer).
I've seen it done successfully in vids such as "Meet the Modern Engineer" or "Meet the Engineer?" (Starring a Masked BLU Spy)
All I want to know is if there's a method to "unlock" their bodygroups, and if so how?
EDIT: I have just been made aware of a quick method to replacing models like an Iron Kurtain instead of a minigun via exprting and reimporting the animations, but I was told exporting and reimporting facial animations for the character models doesn't work (I've had SFM crash on both attempts of saving "Meet the Heavy" facial animations, but that could be another issue). Is this true or is there a solution?
I'm not sure, but don't you just right click the model, click on the body drop down, and pick the one you want?
edit: I got the masked spy that way...
you can right-click, view element in dme editor, and edit the bodygroup number to whatever you want

Not on the main characters of the Meet the Class vids you can't. That's what my question is regarding. I can replace Heavy's Minigun by model replacement, so no bodygroup/skin fix needed for that, but the specific characters are not proving that easy.
The bodygroups for the SFM models are out of date, so you can't swap them around like you'd want to.

That certainly would make sense.
And I believe a friend of mine found us a working alternative a short while ago (and rather simple on the most part); by exporting and reimporting the animations onto a newer model, than tweaking the hold to make them appear. It's worked wonders on Meet the Engy. Meet the Heavy might need some tweaks in eye posing as that didn't seem to import 100% correct, but it is only Meet the Class vids afterall, and practise is their purpose (though I'll certainly pass the word on what my mate found out where I can. Getting this knowledge we got was a frustrating mystery as total newcomers merely experimenting).
Thanks for the info!

You don't even need to export them; Just select the old model, copy all of the animations in the motion editor, then paste them into a new version of the model
