Hi, I had this great idea to remake die hard 1 in SFM... Considering how long professional short films take to make, this seems like I am going to be here for a prety long time, I'm projecting that by next christmass, (2013) It will be ready to render, and then it would take about another year to render out unless I update my PC by then. (Curently: 2.4ghz quad core 64 bit capable, 2 gig ram, Nvidea geforce somethingoranother) I would like to be able to post lo res progress clips, and receive helpful feedback from the community. Also, I need a decent name for it, Die Hard Fortress doesn't have much of a ring to it, sooo any suggestions? I look forward to hearing what you guys think about it! And if anyone wants to help out I would be thrilled to include you in the project, I need all the help I can get! L99
Spy Hard.
Spy Hard.
hehe... Great idea! Not quit what I was looking for, but it's a start! Remember peoples, I need a name!
Crit Hard?
If you are seriously considering doing the WHOLE movie, I think it'd be a good idea if you contacted some people on Silver Studios and 20th Century Fox about it.

It's going to be non-profit, obviously, unless I use completely custom models and my own soundtrack.

Usually regarding short videos using snippets of audio from movies get away with it, but if you're going to do the -whole movie- there's a risk you're gonna get in trouble unless you get a fair-use permission from the publishers. You wouldn't want to spend a year or so making this video only to have it removed on copyright grounds, would you? [editline]28th July 2012[/editline] Better safe than sorry, and all that.

But the first problem that I would run into is how will I contact them, they receive millions of emails a day probably, so how will mine get through, and would they even care about this?

That way you won't have to wait for an email reply.

It's not something you can 'not intend to do' if you're posting videos that another company created. It's like walking into a shop, stealing something and then saying 'oh no theft intended'. I'm not against the re-posting of videos on youtube; I think the freedom to adopt works for non-profit causes should be championed. But the way people think sometimes...
By next christmas you'll have about 30 minutes done at most.
Not if i make it really crap and to terrible faceposing... 30 minutes works for me. Also, i think I will render it in 1080p... But I may need to travel to Korea so I can upload all the footage, because this thing is going to chew up my 1 TB drive in seconds, and I need a 1Gbps if I want to safely upload over 10GB files repeatedly! Do you guys think the virtual dub method is a better idea than straight uncompressed avi? Also, who do you think has the phone number 20cent fox? I may need it! Or even an email address for the copyright department :P
I may need to travel to Korea so I can upload all the footage
what
You're going to give up after 2, maybe 3 days of work.
what
If I'm going to upload a ton of footage, I need one of the worlds fastest internets!
If I'm going to upload a ton of footage, I need one of the worlds fastest internets!
move to kansas city and use google fiber network 1gbp/s
You're going to give up after 2, maybe 3 days of work.
No I'm not, how can I finish if I have to make a large set of custom models and skins, at least 4 different maps and 3 cases of requiring to face pose the world-famous line! Hell naw, I am going to work with this project until I have it completed. That would be good for when I go to uni, an "on going animation project of epic proportions" in my portfolio! [editline]29th July 2012[/editline]
move to kansas city and use google fiber network 1gbp/s
The funny thing is people thought it was 1GBps, when it's 1gbps. 1gb = 0.125GB lol

Good luck on your project, see you next Christmas!
This is a terrible idea.
This is a terrible idea.
What makes you say that?
What makes you say that?
Just the sheer size of such projects would be expensive, both monetary and in terms of time. You're not going to be able to do this by yourself. Trust us. If you're dedicated, hire people that will work with you.
Funniest thread ever, at first I though he was a mad guy, maybe the lonely cliché who is always hiding in his house and who be able to do this kind of project, because he seemed really confident. After that I found out its a kid with too much dreams ! I bet my computer you wont do this stupid project, I mean a perfectly done film. Its easy to recreate a bad remake, its way more harder' to make it looking like Valve' standards. I'm about 20hours for 30 sec length and good light/animation, how it gonna be for an entire film ?? Another point, why make a simple remake of a movie ? Why dont you go make YOUR movie ? I mean, whats the point of this !? Stop dreaming kid.

He could help me when he has free time. You guys may not think I'm dedicated, but then again, you havnt seen me when I need to get something done by a deadline. FoG: Custom trade map, went in holiday, came back and they were Fanatix Network, they didn't want the map. I did a yr11s gcse course work for dt in 3 hours on blender, had to design a hi res model of a busstop, he got the best results in the whole of his year. (he asked me for a cure fo cancer, I couldn't quit do that) The point is, I will be dedicated, right now I'm half way through a 1 month holiday in cyprus, that still hasn't stopped me coming up with ideas for the different maps or ideas for model skins. I'm using all the 3d modelling software I can get on the iPad for basic sketches of the map for the limousine, and for ideas on the limo itself! You want dedicated? By august the 31st I promise I will have at least 5 minutes of 480p footage that I will post up to YouTube and facepunch, I promise that if I don't deliver, well, you can guess what talks the goodies will be having with some admins... He's not being a hater, he's just bringing a level of realism that you're not willing to accept.
He's not being a hater, he's just bringing a level of realism that you're not willing to accept.
I did say he wasn't being realistic, if it's 20 hours for 30 seconds, you do the math 800 hours for 5 minutes, so 33.3rec days, working about 8 hours a day... So about 100 days, but without some of the generic parts of the movie taking so long, so 60 days, +map making and skinning, so let's say 80 days for the first little scene. Realistic enough for you??
