Models showing through the models in front of them

I am having a problem similar to the one that OP is having in [URL="http://steamcommunity.com/app/1840/discussions/0/828939978330820558/"]this thread[/URL], and I can't seem to fix it. My ported models show through most objects, even when they are behind the other object; in other words, my models are always in front. Is this a normal problem? Any idea how I can fix this?
When I port the models (from a .NIF), I export the .OBJ from NifSkope, then import it in to 3dsMax. From 3dsMax I export the scene as my 3 .MDL files. After this I open the phys and regular model and do a "Find&Replace" command to replace dds with vtf. I then use VTF Edit to create the texture files, then I make the texture files "vertexlitgeneric." Then I compile the QC.
