What if when you pasted a link, say like https://bulma.io/documentation/overview/start/ some magic would happen, and it'd convert it to this [Get started with Bulma] So when you paste links, instead of just showing the URL in the post, it'd show the title of the target link?
Interesting idea, tho will it also be able to control what is says? Basically what ever you want or just the plain link.
im a paranoid fuck, as long as I can hover over the link and see the actual URL im all good - this change seems good and clean.
maybe when you paste a link it gets some paste options like when you paste an image in. select either magic, plain link, or write yourself.
Not so sure if it'd be a good idea in that form, can be easily abused to trick people to go to another website than the intended one, if they use the same title. Also raises the question of what would it do with pages that have no title or an extremely long and pretty broken ones (unicode titles are fun for example). Maybe have it append the domain to the link followed by the title so say like. [ Facepunch.com | Lorizzle for sure fo shizzle fo shizzle amizzle ] That way its clear where the link is going to and situations where pages with the same titles don't get mixed up or used to trick people into clicking them, plus if the title is empty or fucked up, it'll still provide something to generate the link off.
make my own page set my opengraph meta to display [That Cat | valve.software] 302 to goatse BBCode always had this issue, and this proposal is, while could be seen as a better solution for preventing title abuse, it could return even worse issues; Users may place trust in this automated system more. if someone made their meta tags to imitate another platform, you could risk a security threat since they could led to believe it's a real site But for forum threads, fucking 💡!
I'm never really a big fan of these kinds of automatic systems, just let us choose the text for a hyperlink or just let it be a plain link in my opinion.
I'm not saying you won't be able to edit the text yourself, I'm saying that if you paste a link, rather than showing the ugly old link it'll show a linked version of the text. Obviously you'll still see the link when you hover. I don't get how you think this could be abused any more than saying click here for free tits, and doing it manually?
Can we turn linked images into clickable links?
That's a good idea, definitely would want something like this for GMod wiki links: http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/bit/bnot [img]http://wiki.garrysmod.com/favicon.ico[/img] [url=http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/bit/bnot]bit.bnot[/url]
I'm with garry on this one, might as well do it. As long as we have the option to revert it back to a standard link if needed, it's probably fine. Issues on illegitimate links existed before but only in different forms.
That's precisely what I had in mind actually!
Link Test: bit.bnot Pressing undo (ctrl+z) will undo the parse: http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/bit/bnot
Neat I do feel that these tech should be documented somewhere accessible, as they aren't exactly intuitive.
Looks like the new links just take the title of the page, and display that. I like the idea, makes it look a lot cleaner.
It's definitely nicer when linking to threads Child Molester is Not A Good Replacement for Dumb vs https://forum.facepunch.com/f/meta/osrb/Child-Molester-is-Not-A-Good-Replacement-for-Dumb/1/
If it's an in house link would it be better to have like [Facepunch] at the start so people know they aren't leaving the website? Just a thought, no bully me.
Will there be any sort of documentation for this fancy post editor? The fact that we will be able to undo things like these is great as an option, but I'm gonna forget and new people won't even know it's there.
Would it be useful to expand it too slightly more functionality than just a plain link? Stuff like putting an article/thread post date in the link, and automatically updating that if requires. As well as eventually coloring the link red if it no longer exists?
Bumping this to request improving links to replies within a thread Maybe this should say Reply #1 in Better Links Idea or something, because I found it a little confusing coming across this naturally Better Links Idea
