My suggestion is to add a way to reinforce a wall to compensate for the new building system
The reinforcement would double a walls health and cost the price to build or upgrade the part to the current tier
This mechanic would allow players to build secure bases and keep them small to reduce upkeep
This benefits small bases since they wil require less building blocks as a defense relative to the ammount of living space.
Example
I have a 2x2 cube and want to add honeycombing all around and use square foundations for simplicity it would require 12 foundations which is 300% of my living space foundations
If i upgraded my base to 3x3 it would require 16 which is only 180%
For a 4x4 this would be 20 which is only 125% of the living space
This illustrates how small bases would have the largest reduction in defense footprint relative to their living space and thus upkeep
